Hindus under attack: a weekly roundup of hate crimes, persecution, and discrimination against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalized & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 03 October to 09 November 2024, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) Samajwadi Party (SP) stirred a fresh flutter in political circles with one of its leaders, taking a shot at Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath through a billboard. The hateful message inscribed on the hoarding read – ‘Mathadish baatenge aur kaatenge’, purportedly directed at the UP CM. SP hoardings read, “Mathadish baatenge aur kaatenge… PDA jodegi aur jitegi.” The latest hoarding, bearing Akhilesh Yadav’s image, was installed by SP leader Amit Chaubey outside the party office

2) BJP says Hindus were attacked during Maa Kali’s Visarjan procession but Kolkata Police claim it was a ‘parking dispute.’

3) In a shocking revelation from the Chhatripura area of Indore, Madhya Pradesh (MP), a recent dispute has exposed escalating extremist rhetoric. Tensions flared as a poster depicting an image associated with Ghazwa-e-Hind—a term often interpreted as a call for an Islamic conquest—was displayed prominently on a mosque in Indore’s Kagdipura area. This imagery and messaging have unsettled many in the community, raising questions about potential threats to the Hindu community across Bharat.

4) A Mandir in Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad was vandalised. When the temple priest in Airport Colony came in the morning to perform daily rituals, he found vigrahas vandalised.

5) In Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara, a Muslim youth Mohammed Taufiq forcibly entered a Ganesh temple and vandalised the murti. After this, Hindu organisations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal staged a massive protest demanding action against the accused Taufiq. Soon after, the police registered a case against Taufiq and arrested him.

6) Kolkata police, working under the direction of the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government, arrested a journalist named Ananyo Gupta. Gupta, who runs the West Bengal-based ‘Madhyom‘ news portal, posted a video on his YouTube channel highlighting attacks on Kali Puja Pandals in Razabazar and Dakshindari.

7) A mosque has been built illegally at the place where Sri Rama had offered water to Bhagwan Shiva in Banda, Uttar Pradesh. Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal have protested against this and also written a letter to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath demanding the demolition of the structure. The Shivling is located on the Bambeshwar mountain and is known as the temple of Bamdev Bholenath.

Bangladesh

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are relentless and designed to cleanse the religious minority from the country gradually. According to a study by Prof. Abul Barakat of Dhaka University, no Hindus will be left in Bangladesh by 2050 due to systemic and institutionalized persecution. Temple desecration, land grabbing, mob attacks after false blasphemy charges, rape/forced conversion of women, and hate speech are tools used to intimidate and drive Hindus out.

1) The Hindu community came under attack from police and law enforcement authorities in Hazari Goli in Chittagong city of Bangladesh. According to reports, the local Hindus staged a protest against a trader named Osman Mollah, who made derogatory remarks about ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) and Sanatan Dharma.

World

1) Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who the USA and Canada back, has come up with another threat against Indians and Hindus. This time, he wants Sikhs to ensure that Hindus don’t celebrate Diwali in their homes and temples in Punjab and elsewhere by bursting firecrackers.

2) Khalistani terrorists attacked the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Canada’s Brampton.

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by emailing [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
