Here is another entertaining story from Kerala . A couple of days ago, while attending a conference organized by an atheist organization, senior Communist leader Anil Kumar spoke about the role played by the Communist Party in promoting free thinking.
During his speech, he mentioned that Muslim girls in Malappuram district refuse to wear headscarves, attributing this to the progressive role played by the CPI (M). Communists are accustomed to making such remarks about the rituals and practices of the native community, and Anil Kumar perhaps thought that he was at a conference “to criticize Sanatana Dharma” (Watch the video).
Soon after the remarks went viral, K.T. Jaleel, a Communist MLA, spoke against these remarks and corrected Anil Kumar. Following this, A.M. Arif, another MLA, supported Jaleel’s remarks. Kerala Communist State Secretary M.V. Govindan came forward and agreed with the statements of Jaleel and Arif.
Samastha, an influential Islamic organization, vehemently criticized the remarks, and so did the IUML, an ally of the Congress. Just a month ago, when the Kerala Speaker, Shamseer, spoke disrespectfully against Ganapathi and the Puranas, the entire party rallied behind Shamseer, supporting him and reaffirming the speaker’s remarks that Ganapathi and the Puranas were myths.
They didn’t bother to retract the statements despite protests by various Sanathani organizations across the state. Shamseer’s statements were celebrated. They did not care if it was hurtful to those who worshipped Ganapathi. But in this case, they are clearly looking for an exit route, as they do not want to antagonize this community.
In the end, it’s increasingly becoming clear that it is only your ability to influence election outcomes that will earn you respect from Kerala politicians. And the Kerala Hindus are still divided and do not have that ability yet.
This episode also demonstrates that the Kerala Communist Party is undergoing a takeover by this community. In fact, it appears that the takeover is complete. They control the Communist Party now.
