Chinishpur Kali Mandir at Velanagar in Bangladesh

Sri Sri Chinishpur Kali Mandir is located at Chinishpur village of Narsingdi district, one of the sanatan religious shrines in Bangladesh. The historical Sri Sri Chinishpur Kalibari mandir (Temple) is located about half a kilometer west of Velanagar bus stand at Narsingdi district town.

The visitors or devotees can reach at Sri Sri Chinishpur Kalibari on foot or by auto or rickshaw from Velanagar bus stand of Narsingdi district town. It is supposed that this mandir was established in 1760. A valiant saint named Dwija Ramprasad founded the temple. Saint Dwij Ramprasad practiced the worship system called ‘Chin Krama’ and hence the name of the village was Chinishpur.

Dwija Ramprasad was the elder brother of Maharaja( King) Ramakrishna Roy of Natore. Having obtained the grace and order of the goddess, he came to the village of Chinishpur and took refuge in the forest’s surroundings. By preparing a five-pointed seat under a banyan tree, Ishta began the penance ( Worship) to gain the grace of the deity and succeeded on the Amavasya tithi of the month of Baisakh.

After the achievement of Dwija Ramprasad, the banyan tree began to be popularly known as a pilgrimage center. Every day, Thousands of men and women thronged under the banyan tree to see the saint and later he installed the Dakshina Kali murti (Idol) in the name of Ishta Devata on the Amavasya tithi ( New moon date) of Jaishtha month.

Since then this Mandir (Temple )is getting known. There were no murti in this Kali house. There was a quadrangle altar in the center of the mandir and the Kalika yantra painted on the altar and in this yantra is the seat of the Goddess Mother. The worship of the instrument is as much as the desire of the soul. It is said that no one can stay in this mandir (temple ) and no one can come back alive sitting there in meditation at dead of night. Chatushadhana Sidva ( four pursuit acclimatized )108 Sri Sri Nigamananda Paramangsha Dev along with his four intimate disciples expressed their intention to visit the said Chinishpur Kali Darshan.

No one comes back alive. Nigmananda Paramahamsa Dev assured that you should not think about this. Paramahansa Dev entered the small brick mandir (temple) in the middle of Jamini, in pitch darkness. He appointed four of his intimate disciples to guard him on all sides so that no one could peep. Because he who sees his leela ( drama) with his mother will not live anymore.

After entering the mandir, Tagore ( the Priest ) closed the door. While sitting in the seat and meditating for a while, Tagore felt someone’s presence. Looking up, a girl of 12/13 years old is sitting with her left leg hanging and her right leg on her left thigh, wearing a free haired permasundari ( most beautiful ) red dress. The mandir’s hall is lit up with the inexhaustible light. Tagore (Priest ) asked that daughter Rupa Ma to sit on his lap. As soon as he said that, the mother came and sat on Tagore’s lap, they talked about many secret matters. Then Tagore said to mother that I will take the burden of those who have taken up to now, you will also have to take the burden of all those who have come and gone. Then mother smiled and said that I took .

Many miracles are said to have happened around this Kalibari. It is heard that once the mother showed her hand in the pond and said to her devotee, Look, I am wearing the bangles given by you. Also many other miracles are spread by word of mouth. A lot of the history of Sri Sri Chinishpur Kalibari is known in the book ‘Dhakar Itihasa’ by the first historian and archaeologist Jatindra Mohan Roy. During the anti-British movement under the leadership of revolutionary Maharaja Trailokyanath Chakraborty, he used to sit under a banyan tree in the secluded Kalibari to train the revolutionaries, organize stick games, darts and wrestling.

The revolutionaries stood in front of the temple and took initiation to sacrifice their lives to become members of the country. Located at Chinishpur village of Narsingdi district headquarters on the south bank of Haridhoa river, a branch of the old Brahmaputra river, this temple is built in a secluded environment. The main attraction of Kalibari is the huge banyan tree growing on about an acre of land. Once there was a Neelkuthi near Kalibari. Today, nothing remains of the blue hut except broken beams and abandoned huts.

Dewan Ramakrishna Roy of Nilkar James Wise built the present temple. Daily programs include morning, noon and evening puja-archana, enjoyment are performed. Also, Annaprasana, Seva is organized as a function of the devotees. Among the annual events, Kali Puja is held on the 1st new moon of Baisakh and Jaishtha months. On this occasion, a big fair is held for one or two days according to the date.

This mandir has about eight and a half bighas of land . A beautiful mandir is yet under construction with a small cow, several restrooms and service arrangements. There is a pond of about two bighas. However, there is no proper accommodation for devotees-pilgrims. For 9 years money is being collected from devotees for construction, development, boundary of the temple as per the design. It will take several more years to build the full-fledged Mandir (temple).
