Surat: Stone pelters, including women, attack Police to help criminal Arif escape

Locals attacked the Gujarat Police team that had gone to nab notorious gangster Sajju Kothari’s brother Arif in Surat. During the late hours on Tuesday, stones were pelted by a mob at the police force allowing the criminal to escape.

In February, Sajju Kothari had escaped from custody of cops from Rander PS and escaped in front of Lajpur Jail. He had been helped by Arif and another accomplice, both of whom had recently got out on bail, in that escape for which two policemen were later suspended for negligence.

A complaint had been registered against Sajju, his brother Arif and three other persons at Sachin Police Station in Surat. Sub Inspector Hadiya and his team from the D-staff unit of Rander Police Station reached Subhashnagar slum colony under Jilani Bridge to nab Arif.

While police personnel were getting on the jeep along with Arif, a crowd, including some women, gathered around the area and attacked the police. Sajju Kothari’s henchmen helped Arif to break free from police’s custody in the melee. The crowd also pelted stones at the police personnel.
