Malappuram schoolmaster caught trying to smuggle rice

Three people, including a school teacher, have been arrested for trying to sell rice meant for school students’ midday lunch in Kuruva panchayat of Malappuram district. The incident took place at Kuruva AUP School. Mehaboob, the school headmaster and a native of Vengassery, Mullapally Ashraf, who was in charge of preparing food. Ashraf too is a teacher at the same school. Karuvalli Zakir, a native of Kachinikad, the vehicle driver, was also arrested. The government supplies rice to such aided schools.

The incident happened on Thursday night. The accused were trying to smuggle rice from the school in a goods auto. They tried to carry more than ten sacks of rice in the vehicle. But their attempts to steal rice were prevented by the alert locals.

The thieves planned to sell rice by bringing it to the wholesale center in Malppuram. But seeing that the rice was being transported, the locals chased the vehicle and caught it. The villagers immediately called the police and informed them.

Kolathur police led by Mankada Circle Inspector Vishnu reached the spot and took the three into custody and registered their arrest on Friday. State Food Commission Member V. Ramesan, Assistant Education Officer Mini Jayan, and mid-day meal officers Jayarajan and Sangeeta visited the school and inspected it. An investigation has been launched.
