Islamist youth stabs mobile shop owner Vikram Choudhary; Hindu organizations protest in Chitradurga, KA

Chitradurga witnessed rising communal tension after a minor dispute over a mobile screen guard escalated into a violent stabbing incident, triggering protests by Hindu organizations and turning parts of the city into a tense zone.

The incident occurred near Santhe Maidan in Chitradurga city, where an argument between a mobile shop owner and an Islamist youth spiraled into violence. What began as a disagreement over a mobile screen guard reportedly ended with the Islamist youth attacking the shop owner with a knife.

According to TV9 Kannada reports, the accused Islamist had purchased a mobile screen guard from the shop owned by Vikram Choudhary. Shortly thereafter, he returned, demanding a different brand. When the shop owner asked for an additional ₹100 for the replacement, the Islamist youth allegedly became enraged and started an argument. The verbal dispute soon escalated into a physical confrontation.

During the altercation, the Islamist youth allegedly stabbed Vikram Choudhary with a knife. The shocking attack was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the shop. The injured shop owner was immediately rushed to the Chitradurga District Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) spokesperson Mohan Gowda stated that yet another Hindu leader had been stabbed by an Islamic jihadi in Chitradurga, adding that Hindus must roar like lions and unite to curb such jihadist aggression.

News of the attack spread quickly, leading to strong reactions from Hindu organizations. Activists gathered outside the district hospital, staging protests and alleging that Choudhary was targeted because of his association with Hindu organizations. Protesters blocked roads, burned tires, and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused.

The protesters warned that if swift action was not taken against the attacker, a Chitradurga bandh would be called.

As tensions threatened to escalate into a communal confrontation, Chitradurga Superintendent of Police Ranjith Bandaru rushed to the hospital, met the injured victim, and reviewed the situation firsthand. Police forces were placed on high alert across sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents.

Meanwhile, restrictions imposed on media personnel attempting to cover developments at the hospital have raised questions and sparked suspicion among observers.

At first glance, this incident may appear to be an ordinary case of violence arising from a personal dispute. However, it becomes important to examine it more carefully within the broader context. When an Islamist youth attacks a Hindu shopkeeper, questions naturally arise: Was this merely a disagreement over a mobile accessory, or could religious identity and ideological hostility also have played a role? Given that several communal incidents have been reported across Karnataka in recent years, many Hindu activists argue that such acts cannot be viewed as isolated occurrences. Repeated patterns of aggression create fear and insecurity among Hindu communities, particularly in sensitive regions of Karnataka, where the ruling party, like Congress, has never been interested in safeguarding Hindus.
