Gujarat: Muslim mob disrupts Holika Dahan in Rajkot, sparks clash after locals object to bike stunts near the ritual

Clashes broke out in Rajkot’s Bhagwatipara area on the night of Holika Dahan after local residents objected to bike stunts being performed near a ritual bonfire, leading to police deployment and multiple detentions.

Incident during Holika Dahan in Rajkot

According to reports, the incident occurred in the Bhagwatipara locality of Rajkot city, Gujarat, on the evening of 2 March 2026, coinciding with Holika Dahan celebrations held on the eve of Holi. Residents had gathered around a traditional Holika bonfire when two young men on a motorcycle allegedly rode close to the ritual area and performed stunts, triggering objections from locals who felt the acts were disrespectful and dangerous in the crowded festive setting.

Eyewitness accounts cited by local media state that the two men, identified as belonging to the Muslim community, were initially confronted by people from the Hindu community who asked them not to perform stunts so close to the bonfire and assembled devotees. The verbal altercation reportedly escalated after the bikers left the spot and, as per the OpIndia account and accompanying social‑media narration, later returned with a larger group carrying pipes and other improvised weapons, leading to stone‑pelting and a brief but intense clash in the area.

Scale of the clash and immediate aftermath

Regional Gujarati outlets described the incident as a “minor clash” between two groups of youths that quickly drew in more people from the neighbourhood as tempers flared. Although visuals circulating on social media showed jostling, shouting and scattered objects on the street, police and local press did not report any deaths, and there were no confirmed reports of serious injuries as of 3 March 2026.

Video reports from local Rajkot news channels show that panic briefly spread in the Bhagwatipara area as the confrontation worsened, with residents rushing children and elderly relatives indoors and shutters coming down on nearby shops. Community elders from the locality intervened quickly and were seen on camera separating the two sides, urging both groups of youths to disperse while police reinforcements arrived.

Police response and detentions

Rajkot City Police moved swiftly after videos of the clash and the preceding bike stunt incident went viral on regional social‑media accounts and messaging groups, prompting concerns about possible communal escalation. Senior officers including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and teams from the Crime Branch, PCB and SOG were dispatched to Bhagwatipara, and additional personnel were deployed for foot patrolling to stabilise the situation.

DeshGujarat, citing an official briefing from DCP Hetal Patel, reported that the altercation began over “a routine matter related to passing through the road during Holika Dahan” and quickly turned into a confrontation between two groups. Police said they had detained around three youths accused of attempting to disturb peace and were in the process of registering offences under relevant sections related to unlawful assembly, rioting and breach of public order, while maintaining that the situation in Bhagwatipara was “completely under control” by late night.

Communal clash

The OpIndia reported that the Muslim mob disrupted the Hindu religious ritual, emphasising that the clash followed objections to bike stunts performed near the Holika Dahan bonfire and claiming that the bikers returned with a mob armed with pipes and sticks. The outlet linked the Rajkot incident to a broader pattern it has documented in past years of Islamist groups allegedly targeting Holi and Holika Dahan celebrations in different parts of Bharat, including a 2021 case in Akola, Maharashtra, where hundreds were accused of dousing a Holika pyre.

However, regional Gujarati coverage, while acknowledging that the clash occurred during Holika Dahan and involved Hindu and Muslim youths, largely described it in more neutral terms as a confrontation between “two groups of youths” triggered by an argument related to parking or road passage near the bonfire site. These outlets focused on law‑and‑order aspects, police deployment and the limited scale of the violence, and did not independently confirm all details of the alleged weapons carried by the group that returned to the spot or the exact size of the crowd involved.

Broader concerns over stunts and festival security

The Rajkot clash has refocused attention on the recurring problem of bike stunts and reckless driving intersecting with religious gatherings and festivals, a pattern that law‑enforcement agencies in major cities have been flagging for several years. For example, ahead of Shab‑e‑Barat and Holika Dahan in 2023, Delhi Police issued an advisory to all 15 districts warning that stunt biking on the night when both observances coincided could trigger communal tensions, and ordered strict action and barricading at key points to prevent dangerous riding near crowded areas and religious sites.

Social‑media timelines around Holika Dahan 2026 also carried viral clips from elsewhere in Bharat showing young men attempting dramatic bike‑based “entries” to light Holika bonfires, including one widely shared video in which two youths crashed their motorcycle directly into a pile of wood and dry grass prepared for Holika after losing balance while trying to ignite it with a torch. Commentators across platforms used such videos, alongside the Rajkot episode, to criticise what they described as a culture of “reel‑making” and thrill‑seeking that disregards public safety and the sanctity of religious rituals.

Appeal for calm and ongoing investigation

Police officials in Rajkot have appealed to residents to ignore rumours and unverified messages circulating on social media and to celebrate the remainder of the Holi festival peacefully. Authorities have maintained a visible presence in Bhagwatipara and surrounding areas through intensified patrolling and bandobast, aiming to deter any further confrontation between communities in the aftermath of the clash.

Investigators are examining CCTV footage, mobile videos and social‑media posts to reconstruct the sequence of events, identify all key participants and verify claims regarding weapons and the size of the crowd that returned to the Holika Dahan spot after the initial objection over stunts. Officials have indicated that additional arrests and formal charges could follow as evidence is collated, even as they stress that the situation has since remained calm and that both communities are being urged by local leaders to cooperate with the probe and help prevent any repeat of such incidents during future festivals.
