“Myanmar Conflict Escalates: 5,000 Buddhist and Hindu homes burned in Rakhine, rebel group captures Buthidaung”, Organiser, May 20, 2024:

“The conflict in Myanmar continues to escalate, with the military-led Junta army and ethnic rebel groups clashing fiercely, particularly in Rakhine State. Recent violence has taken on a communal dimension, with reports indicating that nearly 5,000 houses belonging to Buddhists and Hindus were destroyed in Buthidaung, a town close to the Bangladesh border.

According to sources, these homes were explicitly targeted due to their owners’ religious affiliations. Most residents had fled to safer areas, leaving their houses empty, but those who remained were forcibly removed, and their properties were looted and set on fire in front of them.

The perpetrators are believed to include conscripts from Rohingya camps in Bangladesh. This destruction occurred between April 11 and 21, leaving Buthidaung under the control of the Arakan Army (AA), an ethnic rebel group. Reports suggest that local Muslims in Buthidaung and the nearby Maungdaw township have primarily refrained from supporting the communal violence and have, in some cases, sought assistance from ethnic rebels to relocate to safer zones…..”

Assam: The Cachar Police seizes drugs worth INR 105 Crores, 3 Mizoram residents arrested

In a successful operation, the Cachar Police seized 10 Kg of drugs from Silchar town. The Police also arrested three individuals who are residents of neighbouring state Mizoram. 

On the night of the 18th of May, a team of the Cachar Police conducted a raid at the Silchar-Aizwal area of Silchar town. In the operation, the police recovered substantial quantities of heroin and arrested three individuals. 

The arrested individuals are Daniel  Lalchandama, Laltalnzova and Miss Lalsawmengi. All are residents of the Mizoram. 

During the operation, the police stopped a car coming from the Mizoram. Several bags and soap cases containing heroin were recovered from the vehicle. A total of 10 kg of heroin was recovered. 

While addressing the media, SP of Cachar, Numal Mahatta, said, “During the operation, we apprehended one woman and two men. From their possession, we recovered nine leather bags and 60 soap cases.”

He also stated that the market value of the seized drugs is around INR 105 crores.

The banking sector has witnessed a profit of Rs 3 lakh crore for the first time in the FY 2023-24.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded banks for this remarkable achievement and said that the condition of banks has improved a lot in the last 10 years, adding that this has helped the poor, farmers, and MSMEs to get credit.

In a social media post, PM Modi said: “In a remarkable turnaround in the last 10 years, India’s banking sector net profit crosses Rs 3 lakh crore for the first time ever.”

Slamming the Congress party, PM Modi said that the UPA phone banking policy caused big losses and NPA to banks.

“When we came to power, our banks were reeling with losses and high NPAs due to the phone-banking policy of UPA. The doors of the banks were closed for the poor.”

“This improvement in the health of banks will help improve credit availability to our poor, farmers and MSMEs,” the PM added.

For the first time, banks’ profit crossed the Rs 3 lakh crore mark in FY 2023-24 with 39 per cent growth on a YoY basis. During this period, public sector bank profit jumped to Rs 1.4 lakh crore with an increase of 32 per cent on a YoY basis, and private banks reported Rs 1.7 lakh crore profit in the last financial year with an increase of 42 per cent on a YoY basis.

In the last 10 years, banks witnessed a major turnaround as their balance sheets strengthened and there was a significant decline in non-performing assets (NPAs) which has caused higher profits.

Gujarat ATS nabs four IS terrorists from Ahmedabad airport

Gujarat’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has nabbed four terrorists from the Ahmedabad airport following a tip-off from a central agency.

The arrested individuals — all Sri Lankan nationals — are reportedly affiliated with the Islamic State (IS), officials said.

“For several days, the Gujarat ATS was closely monitoring the activities at the Ahmedabad airport. Four police teams were strategically positioned to monitor and apprehend the suspects. The terrorists were nabbed on Sunday night. Their intensive interrogation is presently underway.” sources said.

“The authorities are probing the reasons behind their presence in Ahmedabad and their intended activities. Preliminary investigations suggest that the interrogation might lead to significant and potentially alarming disclosures,” they added.

The ATS will address a press conference on this issue later on Monday.

Minor Hindu girl raped and killed: Karachi, Pakistan

The dead body of a minor Hindu girl was found hanging from the neck in a bungalow located in Khayaban-e-Bukhari, DHA, Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. The Hindu girl was named Maria, but lovingly called Paaria; the 16-year-old was from Tando Haider, Hyderabad. She worked as a maid at the home of a Muslim physician who lived in the bungalow.

Based on initial reports, Maria’s dead body was found on 12 May 2024, which prompted immediate inquiries into the circumstances behind her untimely death. Post-mortem investigations have reportedly found clear evidence of both sexual assault and murder, refuting the doctor’s original suggestion that the patient committed suicide.


In this case, Dr. Feroz Khan and Inayat Khan are the accused. Although the latter allegedly reported to the authorities that Maria had committed suicide, the results of the autopsy have raised serious charges of rape and murder against him and his accomplice.

There can be an increasing demand for justice from various societal segments as the investigation progresses. The sad tragedy has rekindled discussions about safeguarding vulnerable individuals regardless of their ethnic or religious background.

“On 17th May, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar acknowledged that the trade ties with India went south after the Pulwama terrorist attack on 14th February 2019 in which India lost 40 brave soldiers. Following the attack, India took some immediate steps to reduce trade with the hostile neighbour including the imposition of 200% import duty.

Firstly, India announced that Pakistan was no longer on the list of ‘Most Favoured Nations’ or MFN. Secondly, India immediately imposed a 200% import duty on all products coming from Pakistan. The neighbouring country’s track record in supporting terror activities in India resulted in a massive economic blowback.

The air strike came much after these initial steps to break Pakistan’s morale economically. Following the decision, then-Finance Minister Late Arun Jaitley wrote on X (then-Twitter), “India has withdrawn MFN status to Pakistan after the Pulwama incident. Upon withdrawal, basic customs duty on all goods exported from Pakistan to India has been raised to 200% with immediate effect……”

Arvind Kejriwal graffiti case: AAP MLAs write to EC, allege threat to Delhi CM’s life

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs have written to the Election Commission alleging a threat to the life of Delhi Chief Minister and party’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal after the graffiti were found inside the Metro stations.

“We are bringing to your attention a very serious threat to the life of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who is also convenor of a national party namely Aam Aadmi Party. In the past also, there have been attempts to physically assault the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The current complaint is regarding the social media posts from an Instagram Handle Ankit Goel_91 who has seemingly defaced the Delhi Metro Coach with a clear message to threaten the life of Arvind Kejriwal,” read the letter.

The letter alleged that he (Ankit Goel) has also posted pictures of similar threat messages being scribbled on the Patel Nagar Metro Station. The threat messages also contain abusive language against the Chief Minister of Delhi. As we understand that CCTV cameras are installed in the Metro coaches, it’s surprising that no security personnel had stopped the person from writing on the walls of the coach,” it read.

The AAP MLAs also said that in spite of these threats being in the public domain, no action has been taken to unearth the conspiracy behind these threats.

“This was clearly the responsibility of Central Government-controlled Delhi Police, however, there appears to be a deliberate plan to ignore these threats. In the past also, there have been multiple attempts to physically assault the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. This social media account also carries photos of earlier attacks on the Chief Minister of Delhi,” the AAP letter said.

AAP MLAs claimed that it appears that the “Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled PMO is planning an attack on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal”.

They alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi can go to any limits in order to harm Arvind Kejriwal.

“If any harm is caused to the safety and security of Arvind Kejriwal, then only and only Narendra Modi should be held responsible for the same. We believe this matter is very serious and stern action needs to be taken up on the highest priority including immediate arrest of the said person. We also request you to direct appropriate authorities to ensure the safety and security of Arvind Kejriwal,” it added.

Mamata backtracks after attacking Ramakrishna Mission, Bharat Sevashram Sangh, and ISKCON monks

In the face of massive criticism from different quarters of the society on her remarks against the monks of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, Bharat Sevashram Sangha and ISKCON, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Monday toned down significantly.

“What have I said? I have not said anything against any institution. I am not against the Ramakrishna Mission. I just talked about a couple of individuals. One such individual was Kartik Maharaj. I said because I got information that he does not allow election agents of Trinamool Congress. He works on behalf of the BJP under the camouflage of religion. He has every right to get involved in political activities. But in that case, he should embrace the lotus symbol publicly instead of taking the refuse of a cover,” the Chief Minister said.

She was addressing an election meeting at Onda under the BIshnupur Lok Sabha constituency in Bankura district in support of the party candidate, Sujata Mondal Khan.

Her explanation comes in the wake of a legal notice served to her earlier in the day by Kartik Maharaj, a monk associated with Bharat Sevashram Sangha’s Baharampur unit of Murshidabad district over her comment.

She devoted much time to explaining her observation about the Ramakrishna Mission. “Why shall I be against the Ramakrishna Mission? Just a few days back when a Maharaj of the mission had fallen sick I went to meet her. I have extremely good relations with them. I restored the residences of Swami Vivekananda, Maa Sarada and Sister Nivedita. But all are not alike and I meant that only. I spoke of only those who are different,” the Chief Minister said.

Political circles believe that the Chief Minister’s explanations on Monday are in the wake of the realization that lakhs of followers of Ramakrishna Mission include non-Hindus also. Several non-Hindu students study in the schools run by Ramakrishna Mission and Sarada Mission.

The faculty of these educational institutions includes individuals from religions other than Hinduism. Several non-Hindu doctors are there on the panel of medical experts in the health services run by this iconic institution founded by Swami Vivekananda.

SC refuses to entertain PIL against three new criminal laws

 The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a public interest litigation (PIL) filed against the three recently enacted criminal laws replacing the IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act.

At the outset, a vacation bench presided over by Justice Bela M Trivedi told the petitioner-in-person that the plea was liable to be dismissed.

Sensing the disinclination of the apex court to entertain the plea, petitioner advocate Vishal Tiwari said that he may be allowed to withdraw the plea with the liberty to make a representation to the government.

“Do whatever you want… This petition has been filed in a very casual and cavalier manner. If you would have argued more, we would have dismissed it with costs. But, since you are withdrawing it, we are not imposing costs,” said the Bench, also comprising Justice Pankaj Mithal.

Ultimately, the plea was dismissed as withdrawn without any liberty to make a representation.

The PIL said that Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita suffer from “many defects and discrepancies”.

“All three criminal laws were passed and enacted without any parliamentary debate as unfortunately most of the members were under suspension during the period,” it said.

Further, it claimed that the title of the three laws is not accurate as per the Interpretation of Statutes and does not speak about the statute and its motive but is ambiguous in nature.

In a recent judgment, the top court urged the legislature to consider making necessary changes in the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 providing punishment to the husband and his family for inflicting any cruelty on a married woman.

It said that Sections 85 and 86 of the new penal code, which is to come into force with effect from July 1, are nothing but verbatim reproduction of Section 498A of the IPC, 1860 and the issue requires a relook by the legislature taking into consideration the pragmatic realities.

“उत्तर प्रदेश की राजधानी लखनऊ में एक दलित युवती के अपहरण का मामला सामने आया है। पीड़िता की माँ ने अपनी बेटी के धर्मांतरण की साजिश की आशंका जताई है। आरोपितों के नाम जुहैब, साहिल, भोलू और जैद हैं। पीड़िता की माँ को जातिसूचक शब्द बोले गए। पुलिस का दबाव बनता देख कर आरोपित पीड़िता को उसके घर के पास छोड़ कर भाग गए हैं। केस दर्ज कर के जाँच और आरोपितों की तलाश की जा रही है। घटना शुक्रवार (17 मई, 2024) की है।

मीडिया रिपोर्ट्स के मुताबिक, घटना लखनऊ के थानाक्षेत्र महिलाबाद की है। यहाँ की रहने वाली दलित समुदाय की एक महिला ने थाने में शिकायत दर्ज करवाई है। शिकायत में महिला ने बताया कि शुक्रवार की शाम लगभग 7:30 बजे वह अपनी बेटी के साथ खेतों से लौट रही थी। जब महिला बख्तियारपुर के पास पहुँची तब 2 बाइकों पर सवार 4 युवक वहाँ आ धमके। इन सभी ने शिकायतकर्ता की बेटी को जबरन खींच कर अपनी बाइक पर बिठा लिया। महिला शोर मचाते हुए बाइक सवारों के पीछे दौड़ी लेकिन तब तक आरोपित फरार हो चुके थे।

पीड़िता ने आरोपितों के तौर पर जुहैब, साहिल, भोलू और जैद की पहचान की। उसी रात वह जुहैब के घर पहुँची। महिला ने जुहैब के घर वालों से अपनी बेटी को मुक्त करने की मिन्नत की। आरोप है कि इन मिन्नतों का जुहैब के परिजनों पर कोई असर नहीं पड़ा। उन्होंने पीड़िता माँ से बताया कि वो लड़की को इस्लाम कबूल करवा के उसका निकाह जुहैब से करवाएँगे। आखिरकार पीड़िता ने अपने पति को सारी बात बताई। पति-पत्नी ने आरोपितों के खिलाफ पुलिस में शिकायत दर्ज करवाई…..”
