Efforts needed for better coexistence between wild animals and humans

Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini honours Dr. Vinaya Jangle, senior veterinarian and wildlife expert

Mumbai: 28th January: Modern India is an interesting combination of technological and infrastructural development and an ancient and holistic cultural ethos. Sustainable development and wildlife conservation are indispensable in this phase of fast growth, something that has been always advocated in our civilization.

Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini (RMP), engaged in capacity building, training and social research since 1982, has always encouraged pathbreaking discussion and brainstorming. In line with that tradition, an interactive session and felicitation of senior veterinarian and wildlife expert, Dr. Vinaya Jangle, for her great work in the field of conservation, was organized today. This short event took place at Knowledge Excellence Centre – RMP’s serene campus – in Uttan, Thane District.

Humans should learn to understand wild animals and their habitats

The objective of this event was to sensitize the audience about environmental conservation, while deriving inspiration from interesting information. This becomes all the more important as urbanization and infrastructure expands, and urban humans come in greater contact with wildlife.

Dr. Jangle, while addressing the trainers, researchers and staff members of RMP present on the occasion, narrated her rich experiences of treating and studying wild animals. During her presentation, Dr. Jangle said that wild animals including Leopard and Elephant are sensitive and intelligent. For peaceful coexistence we too need to become sensitive towards nature. Humans need to protect habitats to protect wildlife.

Coexisting with leopards

Dr. Jangle gave the example of the Leopard, while emphasizing the need to understand wildlife and its habitat. She said, “Humans are not the natural prey of leopards. Man-eating leopard is a rare phenomenon arising out of specific circumstances such as illness. Otherwise, a leopard normally moving around at a place, a juvenile in search of new territory or a leopard that has lost its way, will not harm us unless provoked.” She narrated thrilling and insightful real-life stories of capturing and releasing into the wild, leopards that had strayed into human settlements in Dahanu, Bordi, Aarey Colony, National Dairy Development Board and Bhandup in Mumbai, Vasai Fort, Padgha in Bhiwandi and Ovala in Thane.

Dogs don’t proliferate if one doesn’t litter around and instances of leopards entering human areas in search of prey reduce. She mentioned the success story from awareness created in areas adjoining Borivali National Park, which was even appreciated by Jane Goodall. She also provided tips on things to do if Leopard enters human settlement. Her experiences of capturing and releasing into the wild, elephants that have migrated into Sindhudurg District, were also very interesting. The subsequent Q&A session greatly improved everybody’s understanding of nature.

Sanman Samvad initiative

RMP regularly organizes such refreshing felicitations and interactive sessions with experts from different fields under the Sanman Samvad series. Dr. Jangle was honoured by presenting a memento depicting Shivaji Maharaj’s emblem, Shawl, Tulsi sapling and a biography by RMP, as a token of appreciation. The event coordinated by Anil Panchal and Jaywant Shelar of RMP surely acclimatized the audience to the natural world, and will play a role in making them more responsible and eco-friendly in their behaviour.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed grief over the stampede incident in Prayagraj Maha Kumbh and offered condolences to the devotees who have lost their loved ones.

In a social media post on X, PM Modi said the local administration was engaged in helping the victims in every possible way and he was constantly in touch with the state government.

“The accident that happened in Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is extremely sad. My deepest condolences to the devotees who have lost their loved ones in this. Along with this, I wish for the speedy recovery of all the injured. The local administration is engaged in helping the victims in every possible way. In this regard, I have spoken to Chief Minister Yogi ji and I am constantly in touch with the state government,” said PM Modi in the post (in Hindi).

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said some devotees had been critically injured in the stampede and are being treated in hospitals. He said the situation in Maha Kumbh was now under control.

He also urged the people not to pay attention to the rumours. He said that around 8-10 crore devotees are present in Prayagraj and there is continuous pressure due to the movement of devotees towards the Sangam Nose. He said that around three crore people have taken a holy dip as of 8.30 a.m.

The CM said this while speaking to the media in Lucknow even as the high-level meeting of top officials at his residence was ongoing. He expressed grief over the stampede in the Maha Kumbh Mela and said all assistance was being provided and the administration was alert.

Giving details about the stampede, CM Yogi said the situation happened at 2 a.m. as devotees rushed to the Sangam nose and the barricades broke due to a massive crowd. The CM said, “A few devotees have suffered serious injuries when they tried to cross barricading on Akhara Marg. The injured have been shifted to hospitals for medical treatment. Since Mauni Amavasya mahurat started last night, a large number of devotees have been coming in.”

CM Yogi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken stock of the situation four times till now.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Governor Anandiben Patel are also continuously taking reports of the situation, he said.

“The situation in Prayagraj is under control but the crowd size remains massive. The saints of different Akhaaras have said that devotees should take the holy dip first and once crowds reduce Akharas will proceed for the holy dip,” the CM said.

CM Yogi once again appealed to the devotees not to pay attention to the rumours and to visit other ghats. “There are large crowds at Sangam Nose, Nag Vasuki Marg and Sangam Marg. I appeal to the devotees to not pay attention to any rumours. Ghats have been made in the entire Kumbh area, devotees don’t need to move towards Sangam nose only. Devotees should take holy dip at the ghats nearest to them.”

The CM said the administration was ensuring proper medical treatment of the injured persons. The Railways have organised special trains from different stations in the Prayagraj region to take devotees back to their respective destinations, he said.

CM Yogi was holding a meeting with the top officials of the state over the situation following the stampede at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. The CM has been constantly monitoring the situation at Maha Kumbh. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Chief Secretary, DGP, Principal Secretary-Home, CM Office officials and ADG Law and Order are present in the war room set up for Maha Kumbh 2025. The CM has been continuously receiving updates from officials and holding meetings since 4.00 a.m. with key officers, providing necessary directions for action.

The CM earlier issued an appeal to the devotees attending the Maha Kumbh to follow the guidelines, cooperate with the administration, and not pay attention to rumours.CM Yogi requested devotees to bathe at the designated Ganga ghats closest to their location rather than attempting to reach the ‘Sangam Nose’ area. “There are multiple ghats available for bathing. Please avoid overcrowding and follow the directions of the administration. Your cooperation is essential in maintaining order and safety,” he said on social media platform X early in the day.

Analyzing AAP Republic day float: promoting Islamism and Sickularism while crafting a Chunavi Hindu agenda for vote bank politics

During the election campaign, Arvind Kejriwal, former Delhi Chief Minister and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), attempted to appeal to Hindu voters while also maintaining his support among pro-Islamic and Sikh communities. However, he recently made a controversial remark by quoting the Ramayana at a rally where he misrepresented the role of King Ravana in the abduction of Maa Sita. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized Kejriwal for distorting the Hindu epic, accusing him of being a ‘Chunavi Hindu’ (a Hindu only during elections) and twisting the narrative of the Ramayana. The BJP also claimed that Kejriwal’s statement insulted Hindu Dharma. In response, Kejriwal retaliated by accusing the BJP of being descendants of Ravana and warned the people of Delhi to be cautious of them.

AAP’s Republic day float

This year, the Delhi tableau highlighted the city’s strides in areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, showcasing the government’s initiatives such as the Mohalla Clinics, improved public education system, and modernized infrastructure. The design of the float included symbolic representations of these services, emphasizing the AAP’s focus on governance and public welfare.

However, what drew attention was the political and cultural themes. Unlike previous years, where the floats often incorporated religious and cultural symbols representing Delhi’s diverse heritage, this year’s float had less emphasis on religious or Hindu cultural representation. This shift led to significant backlash, especially from Hindu groups who felt sidelined in favor of promoting secular values and showcasing achievements linked primarily to AAP’s governance.

Exclusion of Hindu cultural representation

The absence of a Hindu Dharma-focused tableau this year drew criticism, particularly from sections of the population who felt that the Hindu culture and traditions were not adequately represented on such a significant national platform. This became a flashpoint for the ongoing debates about how minority appeasement and secularism are shaping the political landscape in Delhi.

Many saw this as part of a larger narrative that the AAP government has been promoting, which some critics believe prioritizes the appeasement of Islamic and Sikh communities over Hindu representation. The lack of Hindu cultural symbols in the tableau was viewed as a reflection of this broader political strategy, particularly as Delhi heads into elections.

BJP slams Kejriwal as ‘Chunavi Hindu’

The BJP has taken a sharp dig at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, branding him a chunavi Hindu—a Hindu only for electoral gains—after his latest announcement of financial benefits for temple priests and gurdwara granthis. The move, coming ahead of the assembly elections, has been widely criticized as mere political posturing to appease Hindus while maintaining his appeasement policies for Islamists and Sikhs.

BJP mocks Kejriwal with Bhool Bhulaiyaa-inspired poster

The Delhi BJP took to the social media platform X to lampoon Kejriwal’s newfound Hindu concerns, unveiling a satirical poster depicting him in a theatrical priest-like getup reminiscent of Rajpal Yadav’s character in Bhool Bhulaiyaa. The edited image shows Kejriwal draped in rudraksha beads, flower garlands, and smeared in vermilion, with incense sticks comically tucked behind his ears—highlighting what the BJP calls his desperate attempt to appear pro-Hindu during election season.

The poster carried a stinging verse aimed at Kejriwal:

“Mandir jana hai bas mere liye ek chalaava, Pujariyon ka samman bas mera chunavi dikhava, Sanatan dharma ka maine humesha mazak banaya.” (Visiting temples is just a show for me, respect for priests is my election drama, I have always mocked Sanatan Dharma.)

The BJP accused Kejriwal of hypocrisy, pointing out that for over a decade, his government has been providing salaries to imams while disregarding Hindu purohiths. Additionally, the party slammed him for opposing the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and opening liquor shops near temples and gurdwaras, calling his sudden concern for Hindu purohiths nothing more than an election stunt.

AAP hits back, BJP calls out its double standards

In response, the AAP retaliated with a counter-poster, challenging the BJP to implement similar schemes in states under its governance. Kejriwal lashed out on social media, claiming, “You have been in power in Gujarat for 30 years and rule 20 states. Why haven’t you done this for pujaris and granthis yet? Instead of abusing me, implement this scheme across the country.”

However, BJP leaders were quick to highlight that Kejriwal’s scheme is just another ploy to gain Hindu votes while continuing his pro-Islamist and pro-Khalistani appeasement tactics. Despite posturing as a champion of Hindus, Kejriwal’s track record tells a different story—his government has persistently funded imams but ignored Hindu religious figures until it became politically necessary.

Election gimmick: Kejriwal’s hollow support for Hindu pujaris

At a press conference, Kejriwal unveiled the Pujari Granthi Samman Rashi Scheme, which promises temple priests and gurdwara granthis a monthly allowance of Rs 18,000. He touted it as the first scheme of its kind, claiming it aimed to support religious workers who are often ignored.

However, people argue that this is just another move to mislead Hindus while solidifying his vote bank among minorities. Despite AAP’s attempts to showcase Kejriwal as a pro-Hindu leader, his selective policies—favoring only certain communities while systematically sidelining Hindus—have become glaringly evident.

The BJP has made it clear that Kejriwal’s sudden temple visits and his dramatic announcements are nothing more than a charade—an opportunistic ploy to deceive Hindu voters before elections while he continues to cater to Islamists and Sikh separatist elements in Delhi.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on January 28 accused Arvind Kejriwal of building a lavish’sheeshmahal’ for himself and being involved in the largest liquor scam in the country’s history. Speaking at a rally in Patparganj, Gandhi criticized Kejriwal for his absence during the 2020 communal riots and for failing to support the poor when needed. He also mocked Kejriwal’s claim of clean politics, highlighting the disparity between his promises and actions.

Kejriwal responded by questioning Gandhi’s silence on the Prime Minister’s ‘rajmahal’ and pointed out that Gandhi’s remarks mirrored BJP criticisms. Gandhi also intensified his attack on senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia, accusing him of being the architect of the liquor scam.

Meanwhile, within the INDI alliance, Congress is becoming increasingly isolated, as leaders like Akhilesh Yadav and TMC MPs have pledged to campaign for AAP in the Delhi elections. Despite this growing support for AAP, the alliance’s continued focus on minority appeasement remains the same. Despite the alliance clashes and internal debates, ultimately, Hindus are being neglected, while minorities are being supported by all means for vote bank politics.

Chief Minister Yogi Adiyanath on Wednesday said the situation in Maha Kumbh was now under control and some devotees have been critically injured in the stampede.

He also urged the people not to pay attention to the rumours.

He said that around 8-10 crore devotees are present in Prayagraj and there is continuous pressure due to the movement of devotees towards the Sangam Nose.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah announces ₹5 lakh for Kho Kho world cup winners; players decry the government’s negligence and insult

0

In a glaring example of political apathy and misplaced priorities, two Karnataka players, M.K. Gautham and Chaitra B, who represented Bharat in the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup and were instrumental in securing victory for their teams, have outrightly rejected the paltry cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh announced by the state’s Congress government. Their decision shines a spotlight on the systematic neglect of rural sports and athletes, compounded by the Siddaramaiah government’s inability to prioritize development over populist freebies.

As per Hindustan Times, the players’ rejection of the award was not a mere act of defiance but a demand for respect and recognition. In sharp contrast, Maharashtra’s government has set an inspiring precedent by announcing Rs. 2.25 crore and government jobs for their Kho Kho World Cup winners. This stark comparison raises the question: Why is Karnataka’s Congress-led government failing its athletes?

Gautham and Chaitra highlighted that the state’s indifference not only demoralizes current players but also discourages future generations from pursuing rural sports like Kho Kho. Their frustration is justified when they see the government pouring funds into cricket while neglecting lesser-known sports, despite their global achievements.

Gautham rightly pointed out, “Even before the last ball in cricket is played, the government rushes to announce rewards and prizes on Twitter. But when it comes to rural sports, all we get are empty promises and disregard.”

The freebie culture vs development

The Congress government in Karnataka has consistently prioritized populist measures over meaningful investments. Crores of rupees are being funneled into political rallies, statues, and vote-bank schemes. Yet, when it comes to rewarding sporting talent or fostering the state’s growth, the coffers suddenly run dry.

Siddaramaiah’s administration has proudly introduced schemes like Gruha Lakshmi and free power initiatives, but at what cost? The freebies, while appealing to the masses in the short term, have drained the state’s resources. Developmental projects have taken a backseat, and sectors like sports, education, and infrastructure are being sacrificed.

A year of stagnation and excuses

In the past year, Karnataka has witnessed a noticeable slowdown in developmental activities. From crumbling roads to stalled infrastructure projects, the lack of funds has become evident to everyone. Yet, Siddaramaiah and his ministers continue to peddle the narrative that the state’s financial health is robust.

When athletes like Gautham and Chaitra demand the respect they deserve, the Chief Minister responds with a dismissive “Let’s see.” This casual attitude highlights the government’s unwillingness to acknowledge its shortcomings.

The real face of dirty politics

This incident is not just about two athletes; it is a reflection of the Congress government’s misplaced priorities and the larger problem of neglecting grassroots development. Politicians are quick to spend on optics and appeasement but remain apathetic to genuine causes that could uplift the state’s youth and promote Karnataka on the global stage.

While Siddaramaiah and his administration continue to boast about their governance, the ground reality paints a different picture. Be it the lack of funds for rural sports, inadequate job opportunities, or the worsening state of infrastructure, the people of Karnataka are bearing the brunt of this mismanagement.

It is high time the Karnataka government takes a hard look at its priorities. The disregard shown towards Gautham and Chaitra is emblematic of a larger rot in the system. If this trend continues, Karnataka risks losing not just its athletes but also its identity as a state that once prided itself on progress and talent.

Sports, like development, require sustained investment and recognition. The Congress government must stop hiding behind excuses and start delivering on its promises. Anything less would be a betrayal of the people’s trust and the aspirations of countless young athletes waiting for their chance to shine.

To make Maha Kumbh plastic free, special machines installed at Mela venue, cloth bags available at Rs 10

The Uttar Pradesh government has taken several remarkable steps to make the Mahakumbh Mela clean and plastic-free.

The government has not only launched a campaign to make people aware but has also taken many measures to make Prayagraj city and the fair area plastic-free. One of the key steps is a cloth bag vending machine through which one can buy a cloth bag at just Rs 10 by inserting a 10 rupee coin.

The government has installed three such machines in the Kumbh area. Along with this, these bags will also be easily available for making online payments. This initiative is motivating people to avoid the use of plastic bags and is helping to make the Mahakumbh Mela area plastic-free.

Abhishek, who came from Bengaluru, praised the government’s efforts and said, “I am coming from Karnataka. I first arrived in Varanasi. From there I reached Prayagraj by Vande Bharat train. Here in Prayagraj, we have seen a very beautiful and clean system. For cleanliness, these cloth bag machines have been installed everywhere. Here you can get cloth bags for less money so that plastic-free Mahakumbh can be celebrated.”

Local resident Santosh Kumar said, “I had never seen the level of cleanliness here before. The arrangements made in Kumbh this time are excellent. Be it the police or other officials, everyone is fulfilling their responsibilities. Yogi and Modi governments should be praised, who ensured such a great arrangement. This time the full effect of ‘double engine government’ is visible in Kumbh. The Kumbh was not as clean earlier, but now it has become much better.”

He said, “The cleanliness system in Prayagraj has become better than ever. The government has completely banned plastic bags and cloth bags have been made available through banks. Dustbins have also been placed at various places and proper arrangements have been made to keep the environment clean. Pollution is also decreasing. The government has done a very good job regarding the entire arrangements.”

Section of Bangladeshi establishment with ISI planning militancy in Assam: CM Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday that there are several reports that some sections of Bangladeshi establishment are trying to revive militancy in Assam with the help of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

He was in Bodoland (Kokrajhar) to commemorate five years of the 2020 Bodo Peace Accord.

On this occasion, he said that for the last three-and-a-half years, there was not even a political agitation in Bodoland.

After the accord peace is prevailing there, he added.

CM Sarma said, “The situation in Bangladesh is not good. We have come to know that ISI with the help of some sections of the Bangladeshi establishment is trying to revive militancy in Assam. However, it’s not practically possible as there is no local support available to spread such intentions. Moreover, people want peace.”

The Chief Minister said: “The plans of some sections in Bangladeshi government and ISI won’t work as local support is necessary to spread militancy but for that, there is no such local support available in Assam. All people in Assam want peace in the state. Assam’s borders with Bangladesh are fully fenced, however, the porous sections along Brahmaputra river where fencing is not possible, attempts of infiltration are being controlled with the help of electronic gadgets and especially with the help of drones.”

On infiltration attempts from across Bangladesh into Assam, CM Sarma said that with the help of gadgets like drones such incidents are caught daily.

“Moreover people of Assam are vigilant when it comes to controlling infiltration and we will not let this happen,” he added.

Replying to IANS on the relationship with Bhutan and its latest infrastructure-related initiatives, the Assam Chief Minister said that the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) is close to neighbouring Bhutan.

Bhutan is building up a great city like Singapore, including lots of tourism-related activities of the neighbouring country will benefit Bodoland as it’s just eight km away from the international border.

CM Sarma said that he had held these discussions with the King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.

He will also hold discussions with Bhutan Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay who will visit Assam to participate in the “Advantage Assam” business summit scheduled for next month.

The business summit will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sarma added.

The exiled ULFA leader Paresh Baruah is reported to be in touch with stakeholders in Bangladesh through ISI to revive militancy in Assam.

Chief Minister Sarma said, “My personal view is that he wants peace and won’t destabilise Assam, as after all he won’t bring violence to his own state.”

The Chief Minister also gave his reaction on the possible ecological threat from a dam reportedly being built by China upstream of Brahmaputra.

He said, “As a state, we cannot talk to China but the Indian government has taken up the matter with China and I am hopeful that a diplomatic solution will be arrived at.”

On the issue of financial requirements of the Bodoland Territorial Council, which came into existence after the Bodo peace accord was signed between the Union government, Assam government, and Bodo leaders on January 27, 2020, the Assam Chief Minister said that the state is self-sufficient in terms of funds.

“My thought is to make Assam a state of givers not takers. We have enough funds to share with BTC. We have enough funds for development and people are satisfied. BTC has an annual budget and the state government spends almost double of that budget on the developmental works there in Bodoland.”

“Opposition cries foul as Parliament Waqf panel accepts NDA MPs’ amendments, rejects opposition’s changes”, Opindia, January 27, 2025:

“On 27th January, the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, adopted all amendments proposed by BJP-led NDA members. The decision was made during a clause-by-clause discussion. However, the amendments suggested by the opposition MPs were rejected, leading to opposition leaders crying foul over the process. The opposition leaders accused the committee chairperson of undermining democratic norms.

The amendments accepted in 14 clauses of the Bill include provisions such as allowing state government officials, along with district magistrates, to take on certain roles and increasing Waqf tribunal members from two to three. While 16 MPs from the ruling alliance backed the changes, 10 opposition members opposed them.

The opposition had proposed amendments to all 44 clauses of the Bill, which were defeated by the same 10:16 margin, deepening the divide between the two sides…….”
