India on Monday ushered in the New Year in a grand manner by orbiting its X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) ISRO and the space agency will also test its fuel cell, a precursor for powering the Indian space station whenever it is built.

At about 9.10 a.m. on the first day of the calendar year 2024, India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C58 (PSLV-C58) standing 44.4-metre tall, with a lift off mass of 260 ton blasted off from the first launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, here. The rocket carried XPoSat and 10 other experimental payloads on its fourth stage.Slowly rising up towards the skies with a thick orange flame at its tail, the rocket gained speed with a sound resembling rolling thunder and went up leaving a thick plume while the people assembled at the viewing gallery clapped their hands with pride.Interestingly, this is the first space mission for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on January 1.At about 21 minutes into its flight, the rocket ejected XPoSat at an altitude of about 650 km.Speaking after the launch ISRO Chairman S. Somanath said: “The orbit accomplished for XPoSat is excellent as the deviation is just three kilometres. The solar panels of the satellite have been deployed.”After orbiting the XPoSat, the rocket’s fourth stage — PS4 stage — will be lowered to 350km, about 9.6 degree orbit, by restarting it twice. The Indian space agency will now use the fourth stage as an orbital platform with 10 experimental payloads loaded on it.“We could have done the experiments at the 650km altitude. We decided to bring down the stage so that we don’t create more space debris,” Somanath said.Continuing further he said, the remaining fuel on the fourth stage will be dumped in an unique manner. The left-out propellant in the PS4 will be disposed of through the main engines as a precursor to enabling the safety of the PS4 stage in atmosphere reentry experiments planned in future, ISRO said. The oxidiser will be let out first followed by fuel in a predetermined sequence of operations. The existing scheme of spent stage passivation by venting the tank pressure will also be active.Post passivation of PS4, the control of the stage is transferred to the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3 (POEM-3) avionics, the ISRO said. The POEM is configured as a 3-axis stabilised orbital platform for conducting experiments to space qualify systems with novel ideas. The orbital platform’s electrical power requirements are catered by a Flexible Solar Panel in conjunction with 50Ah Li-Ion battery in battery tied configuration. The orbital platform consists of avionic systems to take care of navigation, guidance, control and telecommands and Orbital Platform Attitude Control System to cater to control of the platform to test the payloads, the ISRO added. The 10 payloads are from TakeMe2Space, LBS Institute Technology for Women, K.J. Somaiya Institute of Technology, Inspecity Space Labs Private Ltd, Dhruva Space Private Ltd, Bellatrix Aerospace Private Ltd (two payloads) and three payloads from the ISRO.According to Somanath, ISRO will be testing its fuel cell which will be the precursor for powering the Indian space station whenever it is built. The Indian space agency will also test its silicon based high energy cells. The XPoSat is the first dedicated scientific satellite from the ISRO to carry out research in space-based polarisation measurements of X-ray emission from celestial sources. The satellite configuration is modified from the IMS-2 bus platform. The configuration of the mainframe systems is derived based on the heritage of IRS satellites. It carries two payloads, namely POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-rays) and XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing). The POLIX is realised by the Raman Research Institute and XSPECT is by the Space Astronomy Group of the U.R. Rao Satellite Centre (URSC).According to the ISRO, the three objectives of XPoSat are:(a) To measure polarisation of X-rays in the energy band 8-30keV emanating from about 50 potential cosmic sources through Thomson Scattering by POLIX payload.(b) To carry out long-term spectral and temporal studies of cosmic X-ray sources in the energy band 0.8-15keV by XSPECT payload, and(c) To carry out polarisation and spectroscopic measurements of X-ray emissions from cosmic sources by POLIX and XSPECT payloads, respectively, in the common energy band.In its normal configuration, the PSLV is a four-stage/engine expendable rocket powered by solid and liquid fuels, alternatively, with six booster motors strapped onto the first stage to give higher thrust during the initial flight moments. The ISRO has five types of PSLV rockets — Standard, Core Alone, XL, DL, and QL.The major difference between them is the use of strap-on boosters which, in turn, largely depends on the weight of the satellites to be orbited. The PSLV uses 6,4,2 solid rocket strap-on motors to augment the thrust provided by the first stage in PSLV-XL, QL & DL variants, respectively. However, strap-ons are not used in the core-alone version (PSLV-CA).The PSLV rocket that flew on New Year Day was the DL variant with two solid booster motors.

How Sonia Gandhi allegedly stopped an important Dharma Sabha that used to take place at Tirupati

Recently, an undated video circulating on social media platform X revealed an alleged incident involving the Congress party and its leader, Sonia Gandhi.

The incident reportedly occurred during 2009-2010, shedding light on the party’s alleged interference in a crucial religious event organised by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) in Tirumala.

An annual Dharmik Sammelan used to be conducted by TTD in Tirumala, bringing together seers and Peethadhipathis from various Matthas. The event traditionally focused on discussions aimed at unifying Hindus, addressing concerns related to conversions, and strategising ways to propagate and preserve Sanatana Dharma.

During the specified period, it is alleged that Sonia Gandhi, then Congress party supremo, exerted pressure on the Chief Minister of unified Andhra Pradesh, Konijeti Rosaiah, to cancel the event. However, it is noted that Rosaiah asked the TTD to postpone the event temporarily.

Cut to the present-day TTD office bearers; it is noteworthy that most (if not all) of them are somehow connected to the Christian faith. We reported earlier that Tirupati MLA Bhumana Karunakar Reddy was appointed as the Chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Board, succeeding former MP YV Subba Reddy in August 2023. The appointment sparked criticism from Hindus and opposition parties due to concerns about Karunakar Reddy’s alleged Christian leanings.

Bhumana Karunakar Reddy’s selection for the prestigious position has raised eyebrows, particularly in the context of rising concerns about Christian evangelism threatening the Hindu community in Andhra Pradesh. Both the outgoing Chairman, YV Subba Reddy, and the newly appointed Chairman, Bhumana Reddy, face accusations of having Christian affiliations.

Andhra Pradesh is known for the widespread phenomenon of crypto-Christianity, a practice where converted Christians officially retain their Hindu identity to dishonestly access quota benefits intended for Hindu SC/OBC communities. This tactic is often employed to deceive the Hindu majority, whose votes are crucial for political support, or to pursue religious proselytisation without encountering resistance.

The above incident allegedly involving Sonia Gandhi and Rosaiah could have been at the peak of the Christian conversion movement in the state.

Goa pastor arrested for alleged religious conversions

Goa Police on Monday morning arrested a pastor for allegedly converting people to Christianity through inducement, along with involvement in black magic.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Jivba Dalvi told IANS that Pastor Domnic D’Souza of the Five Pillar Church in Sodiem village in North Goa was arrested on Monday following a complaint from a Hindu person.

“Acting upon the complaint, Mapusa Police arrested him for involvement in conversion and black magic. This is the third offence registered against him on similar sections (conversion) and five more offences in different sections are already registered. Total eight offences are registered against him,” Dalvi told.

The case has been registered against him and his wife Mrs. Joan Mascarenhas and also against unknown members attached to Five Pilar Church, under section 153-A, 295-A , 506 (ii) R/w 34 IPC , Sec 3, 4 , 7 of The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act 1954.

In December 2022, the North Goa District Magistrate had ordered a ban on religious activities by Pastor Domnic D’Souza.

Domnic D’Souza was earlier arrested on May 27, 2022 following two written complaints by Nikhil Shetye and Prakash Khobrekar.

“Ban has been ordered to carry out religious activities by Mrs Joan Mascarenhas D’Souza and Mr. Domnic D’Souza in their institutional building at Sodiem, Siolim, Bardez Goa in order to curb the religious conversions by means of allurement or fraud which may ultimately affect the freedom of religion and conscience of Citizens,” Order by district Magistrate had stated.

“Given the emergent nature of the situation, immediate prevention is desirable. Therefore Mrs Joan Mascarenhas D’Souza and Mr Domnic D’Souza are directed to abstain from engaging in religious conversion,” the Order further said.

In their complaints, the victims had alleged that Dominic D’Souza and his associates were inducing people for religious conversion.

The case registered against him in 2022 was later transferred to the Crime Branch.

Yogi’s bulldozers deliver crushing blow to organised crime in UP’s badlands

0

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s much-publicised bulldozers — known as ‘Baba’s bulldozers’ in local parlance — have emerged as a symbol of State power and a crushing machine for patrons of organised crime.

Yogi Adityanath has been using bulldozers to raze properties, built illegally on government land by criminals and the mafia. The first major property to be bulldozed was the palatial house of Vikas Dubey in Kanpur. Dubey was the main accused in the massacre of eight policemen in Bikru Village on July 3, 2020. He was later arrested and shot dead in a police encounter. His house in Bikru Village was pulled down and remains so till date.

The bulldozer picked up speed after this incident and properties belonging to mafia dons like Mukhtar Ansari, Atiq Ahmad, their kin, business partners and aides have been pulled down in various cities of Uttar Pradesh. The Yogi Adityanath Government mainly targeted two mafia dons – Mukhtar Ansari and Atiq Ahmad – and today a majority of the members of these two gangs are either dead, in jail or on the run.

A senior STF official said, “We can claim that almost 95 per cent members of the Atiq and Mukhtar gangs are either dead or in jail. The remaining members are absconding. Organised crime has been dealt a death blow in Uttar Pradesh and the real estate business has taken a hit since the mafia invests its money in this sector.”

The bulldozer action has almost become synonymous with freedom from oppression, especially among the poor, whose land was usurped by the dons. On the other hand, it has instilled a deep sense of fear among criminals who poach on the properties of others.

The popularity of the bulldozer is apparent from the fact that the market is flooded with bulldozer-shaped sprinklers during Holi and bulldozer-shaped crackers during Diwali. The most favoured toys in the market now are also bulldozers.

However, while the state policy is getting increasingly bulldozer-driven, petty criminals are getting a free run. This has led to a spurt in crimes including rape, murders and kidnappings for ransom.

The biggest challenge that the Uttar Pradesh Police now faces is the sudden spurt in cyber-crimes which are being reported in more numbers than routine crimes. The police force of Uttar Pradesh is not yet fully equipped to deal with such cases and the common man remains vulnerable to such crimes.

“Cyber-crime is changing its form almost every day. Artificial Intelligence-based voice cloning is the latest tool for extortion. We have to equip our cops with the latest technology and the problem is that most of them are not tech-savvy. We are taking steps to provide necessary training so that every district has its own cyber cell,” said a senior police officer, known for his expertise in handling cyber crime.

As the Ram Mandir inauguration in Ayodhya is coming closer, Karnataka police department has taken up cases for investigation against Ram Mandir activists who allegedly indulged in destruction of property and other cases three decades ago at the height of the movement for Ram Mandir, according to sources.

Sources further explained that the police department had formed a special team and prepared a list of accused persons who are involved in police cases during 1992 Ram Mandir movement which resulted in Islamist violence and subsequent communal clashes.

Hubballi police arrested Srikanth Poojari in connection with alleged case of torching a shop owned by a minority on December 5, 1992, in Hubballi. Poojari is the third accused in the case and the police are looking out for other eight accused in connection with the case. Poojari had been sent to judicial custody.

Likewise, Hubballi police prepared a list of 300 accused persons who are allegedly wanted in communal clashes that took place between 1992 and 1996. The police sources explain that the accused are in their early and late 70’s now and many of them have gone away from the city.

Many of the accused are now in important positions and police are also considering the consequence of legal action against them. The Congress government has allegedly directed the police department take up the cases for investigation in this regard.

Many individuals in Ram Janma Bhoomi movement are now prominent BJP leaders and when BJP was in power, the cases against prominent leaders were dropped, sources said.

Hindu organisations have expressed outrage against the move of the Congress government. They have charged that as BJP and Hindu organisations have taken up door-to-door campaigning in the backdrop of inauguration of Sri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, the Congress government not able to tolerate the campaigning is resorting to such move to initiate action on cases reported three decades ago.

The development is likely to stir a major controversy in the state. Karnataka witnessed major violence after Islamists opposed the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in 1990s.

Maharashtra Police uncover racket where Bharatiya passports are issued to illegal Bangladeshi intruders

Maharashtra police unearthed a passport racket in which Pune’s local passport office is involved. They issued passports to many Bangladeshis who entered Bharat unlawfully. These people used fake rental agreements from a slum area to get the passports.

Around six people got passports by using a rental agreement with the name of a woman who had already passed away to show they lived in a slum. The Pune Police Commissioner said that if any staff or officials from the passport department are involved, they will face consequences.

The Mumbai Police arrested six Bangladeshi people, and during the investigation, it was found that they got passports using fake documents related to a slum house in Yerawada’s Yashwant Nagar. This house belonged to a woman named Suman Tujare, who is no longer alive. Similar fake documents were used to get four more passports for an address in Hadapsar. About 70 passports were issued to illegal Bangladeshis using counterfeit documents in the last few months.

The investigation showed that these illegal Bangladeshis wanted to go to Gulf countries using Bharatiya passports. Given the seriousness of the fraud, the police plan to take action against those involved in the passport section. Further investigations confirmed that all the suspects were citizens of Bangladesh who entered Bharat illegally. The Pune police commissioner, Retesh Kumaar, mentioned, “We have looked into the matter, and five police personnel from the passport section are facing consequences for not doing proper checks.”

As per a report by The Indian Express, a late Suman Tujare family member said, “We never let anyone stay in our house. Surprisingly, fake rental agreements were used to get multiple passports using our addresses. We provided Suman Tujare’s death certificate to the Mumbai police team during their investigation.”

The investigation also found serious mistakes regarding police verification before issuing passports. The Pune police reported that everything was passed without visiting Tujare’s home to ensure the people applying for passports lived there. The passport office relied on this report to issue Bharatiya passports to people from Bangladesh.

Mumbai police launch probe

In the last two and a half months, a team from Borivali police in Mumbai, led by Sub Inspector Pramod Nimbalkar from the Anti Terrorist Cell (ATC) and Senior Inspector Ninad Sawant, caught 20 Bangladeshi migrants and two Bharatiya citizens involved in a scheme providing passports, Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, and other documents to people without proper papers.

The police found 10 Bharatiya passports issued in Pune, along with fake rental agreements, fake Bharatiya birth certificates, Aadhaar and PAN cards, Bharatiya voter ID cards, Bangladeshi money, and more, during the arrests in Mumbai and Pune.

Sub Inspector Pramod Nimbalkar, from the ATC, shared that two individuals, Rahul Singh (also known as Shahrukh Khan) and Salman Ayub Khan, both originally from Bangladesh, are accused of helping Bangladeshi people illegally enter Bharat by crossing the international border. Rahul, who lived in Pune, is believed to have escaped to Bangladesh, while Salman has been caught.

Nimbalkar explained, “After reaching West Bengal, the racketeers gave the Bangladeshi migrants fake Indian birth certificates. Then they sent them to Mumbai and Pune, where they got Aadhaar cards and PAN cards using the fake birth certificate. The suspects then applied for Indian passports using Pune addresses. The agents provided fake rental agreements from Pune as proof of address, even though the Bangladeshi migrants never lived there. Some lawyers in Pune made these notarized rental agreements without checking the facts.”

Individuals Behind the Facilitation of Fake Documents

Sainath Yeilwad, who is currently evading arrest, is accused of issuing fake rental agreements with the address of deceased Suman Tujare to six illegal Bangladeshi people. Investigator Nimbalkar mentioned, “We are looking into why Tujare’s address was chosen for the scam.” Additionally, an agent named Kusum Gaikwad provided fake rent agreements for a Hadapsar address to four illegal migrants. She has been arrested and was involved in cheating cases before. She made phoney rent agreements using the name of her former driver.

Talking about the plans of these illegal Bangladeshi individuals to go to the Gulf, Nimbalkar explained, “There seems to be a big scheme where Bangladeshi citizens were brought to India illegally and then sent to Gulf countries as Indian citizens for jobs. They paid around Rs 7 lakhs to be part of this. We found a website that is being used for such schemes.”

70 Bangladeshis got Indian passports using fake documents

Sub Inspector Pramod Nimbalkar shared, “Our investigation found that around 70 people from Bangladesh were sent to Gulf countries using Indian passports in the past few years. Even the ones we caught had Indian passports and the same intentions. It looks like the Bangladeshi individuals thought it was easier and more affordable for Indian citizens to find jobs in the Gulf. So, instead of trying for jobs in the Gulf from Bangladesh, they entered India illegally.”

Islamist no-go zone Mewat’s lone wolf scammers like Rizwan thrive on ‘sextortion’

0

The Mewat region, spanning Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, has emerged as the new hotbed of cybercriminals in 2023, following in the footsteps of Jamtara. With satellite towns and villages becoming breeding grounds for scams, the Mewat cyber thugs have introduced sextortion as their latest modus operandi, posing a unique challenge for law enforcement agencies.

In contrast to organised phishing industries seen in other parts of the country, Mewat’s cybercrime operations are characterised by an unstructured cottage industry. The absence of kingpins has turned this into a leaderless crime racket, where a smartphone and a SIM card are the only tools needed to initiate scams and blackmail.

The Delhi Police is now closely monitoring the activities of young scammers operating from Mewat, as reported cases indicate a rising trend of cyber cheats originating from the region. The scammers not only engage in sextortion but also exploit online marketplaces like OLX to deceive victims, either physically or virtually.

Unlike their counterparts in Kolkata’s phishing industry, Mewat scammers adopt a different approach.

“Truck drivers, native to the region, play a significant role in making suspicious phone calls from nondescript highways using fake SIM cards. Their ability to switch between English and Hindi during scams makes it challenging to track and apprehend them,” said a senior police official.

Reports suggest that approximately 300-400 individuals fall victim to these scams daily, with each fraudster earning up to Rs 3,000. The three districts within Mewat collectively report over 8,000 cybercrimes, resulting in financial losses ranging from Rs 1.6 to Rs 2.4 crore.

In November, a 22-year-old man was apprehended for posing as a police officer, defrauding senior citizens by displaying explicit videos of young women via WhatsApp calls, and subsequently extorting the victims by capturing screenshots of their mobile screens.

The accused was identified as Rizwan, a resident of Deeg district in Rajasthan. He used to pose as Vikram Rathore, ACP in the Crime Branch. It is worth mentioning here that Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar had played a role as ACP Vikram Rathore in the movie “Rowdy Rathore” and the name is being frequently used by the cyber cheats to dupe people.

According to the police, on July 18, a case was registered based on the complaint of T. Aggarwal, who alleged that he received an unknown WhatsApp video call featuring an undressed girl, during which a screenshot was taken, capturing the complainant’s face.

Shortly afterward, he received calls from two different numbers, with the callers claiming to be from Cyber Crime Delhi and asserting that the alleged screenshot was on the verge of being circulated.

They proceeded to threaten the victim, demanding a substantial sum of money; otherwise, the video would be made public, and he would face arrest. Additionally, the alleged individuals sent the victim an image of a deceased girl and a police warrant via WhatsApp.

Frightened by the threats, the complainant transferred approximately Rs 12,80,000 to the bank account provided by the fraudster.

In yet another case, the Delhi Police this year had also arrested a 55-year-old cyber fraudster for allegedly posing as an army personnel and duping a wire manufacturer on the pretext of purchasing wires for a school. The accused was identified as Ali Mohammad, resident of Nuh district in Haryana. The official said that so far, a total of 15 complaints from various states have been identified which are linked to the accused and a further money trail of more than Rs 22 lakhs has been found.

The arrest came after a complaint was received by the police on June 10 from one Ankit Garg, a resident of Shahdara area where he, who does wire manufacturing work, alleged that he got a call from an Army officer, who required wires for the Army School.

The National Crime Record Bureau’s recent data for 2022 reveals a concerning surge in cybercrimes across the country, with a 24.4% increase compared to the previous year. Fraud accounts for the majority of cases at 64.8%, emphasising the urgent need for strengthened cybersecurity measures and increased public awareness to combat the growing threat of cybercriminal activities in India.

As 2024 approaches, the question looms whether Mewat will continue to be the epicentre of cybercrime or if concerted efforts can curb this rising menace.

Bharat’s economy to stay as star performer with key indicators in its favour

0
bharat's economical growth

Bharat continues to be a ‘star performing’ economy as against other emerging markets, as per a report by Axis Securities.

“We firmly believe that India is likely to continue its growth momentum in 2024 and remain the land of stability against the backdrop of a volatile global economy. The majority of the high-frequency indicators are trending upwards and the uptick from the pre-Covid levels is visible, indicating the resilience of the Indian economy,” the report said.

On top of it, the macroeconomic scenario has changed in favour of the equity market in the last one month and multiple indicators are now indicating a positive start for 2024.

It is also noteworthy that the US bond yields witnessed a correction of 110bps from its peak in the last one month, which is further supporting the rally. Overall, the country’s macro set-up is positive, the report said.

The fundamentals of Indian corporates have improved significantly and so has the profitability across the board. This can be seen in the cumulative and rolling net profit of the NSE 500 universe for the last four quarters (till Q2FY24), which crossed the Rs 12 lakh crore mark. Moreover, after a muted performance for several years, the ROE of the broader market is improving as well.

The bolstered balance sheet strength of corporate India and the significantly enhanced health of the Indian banking system are additional positive factors. These elements are poised to facilitate Indian equities in achieving double-digit returns over the next two or three years, supported by robust double-digit earnings growth, it added.

Multiple events are lined up in 2024 and the market will continue to closely monitor the developments around them.

The key events are: 1) Interim Budget; 2) General Elections; 3) Expectation of US Fed rate cut around May-June 2024; 4) Full-year Budget around July 2024 after the formation of new government; 5) Expectations of interest rates cut by the RBI in sync with global rate cuts; 6) US elections in November 2024.

The above-mentioned events are expected to keep the Indian equity market volatile and it could respond in either direction based on the developments, the report said.

Kenneth Andrade, Founder-Director at Old Bridge Capital Management and CIO at Old Bridge Asset Management, said that a global rebalancing of trades works favourably for India, positioning the country to gain global market share across various industries.

Opportunities span a wide spectrum, with a particular focus on the large manufacturing footprint and the resilient services industry, both of which are globally competitive.

“However, as we look ahead to 2024, there are areas of caution. Excesses in the small and microcap space raise concerns, and there is an anticipation of volatility, especially in segments where valuations appear stiff. Despite these short-term challenges, the overarching trend seems to favour India, presenting a higher growth potential relative to peer countries in the region,” the report said.

HDFC Securities said in a report that India’s GDP growth will remain healthy at 6.8 per cent in FY24 and moderate to 6.3 per cent in FY25. Domestic manufacturing to lead growth, rural growth to be supported from rural welfare schemes in the Budget and global headwinds will impact export-oriented sectors, it said.

13-year-old detained for brutal murder of six-year-old boy after failing to sexually assault him: UP

0

The police have taken into custody a 13-year-old boy from the Railway Overbridge in the Industrial Area for the brutal murder of a six-year-old boy in Haldi Kala village in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on December 27.

The accused, known to the victim, was taken by the Industrial Area police and personnel from the trans-Yamuna special operations group of Prayagraj police.

The detained teenager, who later confessed his crime, had attacked and killed the child with a brick after failing in his attempt to sexually assault him, said a police official.

The 13-year-old is a Class 5 student who not only studied in the same school as the victim but also used to play with the victim often. On information provided by the accused boy, blood-stained clothes and the brick used in the crime were also recovered, the police added.

“A teen known to the victim and residing in the same neighbourhood as the victim has been detained on Sunday in connection with the murder. He has confessed to the crime. We are now preparing to present the accused in the juvenile court. Evidence has been collected against him,” said deputy commissioner of police (trans-Yamuna) Abhinav Tyagi.

The questioning has revealed that the victim was playing with his friends on the day of the murder. He strayed some distance while playing. The accused teen then took him to a secluded place and tried to sexually assault him. The victim resisted and tried to raise an alarm following which the teen panicked and hit him on the head and face with a brick lying nearby, said the official.
