Narcotic jihad in Malabar, Kerala

In a case of narcotic jihad, Mattannur police in Kannur district arrested two people, including a woman with methamphetamine (MDMA), from an apartment. Nihad Muhammad (29) of Kannur Thavakkara and Anamika Sudeep, (25) of Pappinisseri, were detained by Mattanur Sub Inspector (SI) RN Prashant.

Police received a tip-off that narcotic drugs were being dealt in from an apartment in Mattannur. They raided the apartment at around 1:30 am on Sunday. Anamika and Nihad were staying in the rented flat. 0.89 grams of MDMA was caught from them.

Police said that the MDMA was kept for personal use and sale. The accused were produced in Kannur court and remanded.

In early March, a young girl and a Muslim youngster were arrested with MDMA in Kozhikode city. They had 49 grams of MDMA in their possession. Shamjad, a native of Nallalam in Kozhikode and Sanjana, a Karnataka native, were arrested. Shamjad works in Karnataka, and Sanjana is just 18 years old.

They were caught from a lodge near Aster MIMS Hospital in the heart of Kozhikode. Sanjana and Shamjad were taken into custody by the medical college police and the narcotic shadow team. Their modus operandi was to bring MDMA from Karnataka to Kozhikode and retail it. The accused focused on hotel rooms in the city.

In the first week of February, three people, including a woman, were arrested for illegally smuggling Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) and ganja. KA Suhail (34), hailing from Chavakkad in Thrissur, Anagh Krishna (27), and CS Shikha (39) were arrested from Ganapathyvattom (Sultan Bathery) in Wayanad district.

97.25 grams of ganja and five bottles of IMFL liquor were seized from the Delhi-registered car in which they were travelling. Suhail, Anagh and Shikha were caught following an investigation by the police and the anti-narcotics squad. The police seized the vehicle they were travelling in. The accused were produced in the court and remanded.

Four accused, including a young woman, were arrested with 158 grams of MDMA in Kannur last November. Yasir, his ‘girlfriend’ Aparna, Yasir’s brother Rizwan, and his friend Dilshid, who were residents of Kannur Puthiyatheru, were apprehended. Apart from MDMA, the town police seized 112 grams of hashish oil from them.

Police first arrested Yasir and Aparna from a hotel room in Kannur where they were selling drugs. After interrogating them, the police got the information that Rizwan and Dilshid were the links in drug sales. Later on, they were caught at another hotel.

This seizure was the biggest MDMA hunt in Kannur in recent times. The gang used to smuggle drugs from Bengaluru. After preliminary investigations, police concluded that the gang sold narcotic drugs to many people with an addiction, including students.

Kannur Town Police said that there are more people in Yasir’s gang, and they will investigate this matter as well. Dilshid had a history of selling cannabis and had been arrested earlier.

Most of these ladies and young girls are allegedly addicted to narcotic drugs which makes them vulnerable to narco jihadis. Local media seldom provides details of the case when it involves narcotic jihad. Follow-ups are non-existent. Who are they protecting?
