United Nations, a ‘toothless tiger’, which is supporting scamster journalist Rana Ayyub to stay relevant

The United Nations was founded after World War II with its main purpose being to establish peace in the world and to stop wars across the world. The United Nations has fallen well short of its primary objectives – to “develop cordial relations among nations”, “maintain international security and peace” and “attain international cooperation to resolve complex disputes”. Another important component of the UN system, that is United Nations Security Council has also made itself irrelevant.

United Nations has now reduced itself to making statements on irrelevant issues to portray its woke and progressive image. In a recent instance, the UN tweeted in support of alleged journalist Rana Ayyub who is under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) these days. The ED had attached Rs 1.77 crore in a money laundering case and the investigation of the case is currently ongoing.

Meanwhile, the UN alleged that Rana Ayyub was being subjected to judicial harassment. UN Mission in Geneva had leveled allegations of “judicial misconduct” against Rana Ayyub. “The relentless anti-women and communal attacks against journalist Rana Ayyub online should be immediately and thoroughly investigated by the Indian authorities and judicial harassment against her should be brought to an end at once”, it said in a statement.

UN human rights experts, Mary Lawlor, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, and Irene Khan, Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of opinion and expression have said that Rana Ayyub has been a victim of intense attacks online by the right-wing groups.

The Special Rapporteurs and Independent Experts are part of the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. It is the largest body of independent experts in the UN Human Rights system and they are part of the Council’s independent monitoring and fact-finding mechanisms. However, careful observation shows that their claims are highly biased in nature, most of the time.

Bharat has slammed the United Nations for its allegations of judicial harassment of journalist Rana Ayyub, calling them “baseless and unwarranted”. A tweet from Bharat’s permanent representative at Geneva and other international organizations reiterated that the United Nations was “advancing a misleading narrative”.

Bharat’s Permanent Mission in Geneva tweeted that “promoting misleading information” will only “tarnish” the image of the UN Mission. The tweet said, “The allegations of so-called judicial torture are baseless and unnecessary. There is a rule of law in India. However, it is also absolutely clear that no one is above the law. We expect to have the right information. The promotion of misleading information will only tarnish the image of the UN Mission. The official sources in New Delhi stated that the matter will be followed up by a note verbale from the Indian mission in Geneva”.

Earlier this month, the Enforcement Directorate had seized over Rs 1.77 crore deposited in Ayyub’s bank account in connection with its probe into a money laundering case related to alleged misappropriation of donations received from the public by journalist Rana Ayyub.

United Nations – A toothless tiger

United Nations track record shows a plethora of failures in recent decades. It failed to control the cold war between USA and USSR. It was unable to rein in the USA when it attacked Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya, and ruined them beyond repair. UN failed to preserve peace in the middle east, instead, it stayed a mute spectator most of the time.

China has made a mockery of the UN, as it has blocked many critical resolutions against terrorism. UN also failed to criticize the initial mishandling of the COVID outbreak and its umbrella organization WHO was instead supporting China.

Even today, United Nations is unable to put an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. UNSC adopted a resolution against Russia, which was vetoed by the latter and ultimately rejected. The UNSC meetings are mere symbolism with little substance, and most of the time the body itself works to fulfill the interests of the USA and its allies. It acts as per the whims and fancies of the USA and its friends, and we have seen how UNSC acted against Syria, Libya, and Iraq, but how it ignored China’s oppression of Uyghurs.

Well, United Nations is undoubtedly a toothless tiger, which has no say in international affairs, and powerful nations are not paying any heed to its suggestions. Now it has come down to such tactics to take the side of fake journalists like Rana Ayyub, without understanding the veracity of the situation, just to stay relevant. Bharatiya Government rightfully countered the tweet of the UN and we are hopeful that this issue must reach a logical conclusion, and the UN will not interfere in Bharat’s matters in the future.
