An incident of targeted violence has been reported from Savar, near Dhaka, where members of the Hindu minority community were allegedly attacked by the Islamists on the occasion of the Bengali New Year.
According to a report, a group of local Muslim youths, described as a “teen gang,” created unrest during New Year celebrations and targeted members of the Hindu minority community. The attack reportedly involved intimidation, physical assault, and disruption of festivities, causing panic among residents.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the attackers engaged in vandalism in Hindu houses and harassment, forcing many families to flee the area temporarily for safety. A Hindu temple was also targeted and vandalised. Armed Islamists also stabbed a Hindu youth. The situation created tension in the locality, especially as the incident occurred during a cultural and festive occasion on the night of 15th of April, 2026.
Local authorities were informed, and law enforcement agencies reportedly intervened to bring the situation under control. However, concerns remain among residents regarding their safety and security.
This incident comes amid broader concerns over sporadic attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh in recent times. Various reports have highlighted that Hindu communities in the country have faced episodes of violence, vandalism, and intimidation, contributing to a climate of fear.
Community leaders have called for strict action against those responsible and urged the government to ensure protection for minorities, especially during religious and cultural events
