“Australia was shaken on Sunday by one of the most violent mass shootings in decades, when two gunmen opened fire at a crowded gathering at Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach. The attack occurred during a Hanukkah festival, one of the first days of the eight-day Jewish holiday, and resulted in at least 16 people killed, including one of the attackers, and dozens wounded. Authorities have declared the incident a terrorist act and are investigating all possible links.
The violence began in the late afternoon on Sunday at Bondi Beach, where more than 1,000 people had gathered to celebrate “Chanukah by the Sea,” a community event meant to honour the first night of the Hanukkah festival. Eyewitnesses described scenes of terror as shots rang out suddenly, causing families, tourists, and locals to flee in panic.
According to police, the two gunmen were carrying long-barrelled firearms and opened fire indiscriminately on the crowd. In the chaos, there were scenes of people dropping belongings, abandoned strollers, and frantic parents trying to protect children as they ran for cover……”
