China actively discourages other nations from engaging with Taiwan, asserting that the island is a breakaway territory claimed by the Chinese Communist Party. Often, China pressures businesses and countries to withdraw official recognition of Taiwan as a distinct entity if they seek formal relations with the People’s Republic of China.
The recent remarks by Bharat’s External Affairs Minister (EAM), S Jaishankar, are likely to raise concerns for the Chinese Communist Party in this context. While speaking at a conference in the United Kingdom, EAM Jaishankar highlighted Bharat’s growing ties with Taiwan.
EAM Jaishankar informed the audience that ” we have substantial technology, economic, and commercial relations with Taiwan. Taiwan, renowned for its expertise in electronics and, more recently, in semiconductors, has witnessed increased cooperation levels. “
These comments come at a time when Bharat’s relations with China are facing significant challenges, marked by the most serious military standoff along the border in over 40 years. Despite China’s insistence that Bharat adhere to the One China Policy for amicable relations, Bharat has ignored this demand in recent years.
“In order for India to accept a One China policy, China should reaffirm a One India policy,” Bharat stated in 2014, shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first term began.
