Pro-Pakistan balloons being sold in Kerala supermarket

Earlier this month, a hypermarket called Carrefresh in Vadakara near Kozhikode in Kerala was found selling balloons that had pro-Pakistan inscriptions like ‘Love Pakistan’ on them. Police inaction has now led to unrest in the area and BJP workers protested outside the establishment.

A local who had purchased packets of balloons for his child’s birthday celebrations was horribly surprised when he blew them. There were Pakistan flags and slogans that said ‘Love Pakistan’ and he brought it to the attention of the authorities.

Speaking to IANS, Ajeer the managing director of Carrefresh Hypermarket claimed innocence.  He said that the merchandise came from a supplier in Mumbai and proclaimed that it was originally from China. He even added that he could not open all the packets and check each one of the balloons.

He added that they have been in the business for the past five decades and that they had withdrawn the controversial stock from his counter display.

“The police have also found out what the real issue is. They said they have to do their duty and a case also has been registered. The police will also probably get in touch with our Mumbai supplier. We have done no wrong at all,” said Ajeer.

Incidentally, this is not the first time that such balloons have appeared in Bharat. In July last year, similar ones were spotted in Kashmir and they had pro-Pakistan inscriptions and the photo of Mohammed Ali Jinnah on them.

Independence day celebrations were also marred by identical unsavory events when such balloons appeared in both Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district and near Punjab’s Rupnagar district.

While liberals and our socio-political elite often find mirth in such stories and try to project relations with Pakistan as a ‘love-hate’ relationship, the fact remains that Pakistan is an enemy nation that uses terror as state policy. It is the modern-day equivalent of Nazi Germany – the 1971 genocide of 3 million Bengalis, 2.4 million of them Hindus, by the Pakistani Army was a crime against humanity than went completely unpunished, largely because Pakistan is central to the geopolitical interests of the US-led West.

And despite suffering for decades from the ‘death by 1000 cuts’ policy followed by the military-theocratic state of Pakistan, there are sections within Bharat who keep treating Pakistan as just another neighbour, some even considering it a ‘friend’. If the Bharatiya state is serious about maintaining its sovereignty and integrity, any pro-Pakistan sentiment should be treated as treason.
