Kargil war hero booked by Maharashtra police for “hate speech”

The ‘secular’ Uddhav Thackeray government has hit a new low by having Kargil war hero Digendra Kumar booked for ‘hate speech’ along with five others. A suo moto case was registered by the Pune Police on December 28 for supposedly communally charged speeches during the Shiv Pratap Din held on December 19 to celebrate the victory of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj over Afzal Khan.

An FIR has been filed under Sections 295 (A) (deliberate and malicious intention of outraging religious feelings), 298 (deliberate intention of wounding religious feelings), and 505 (2) (false statement, rumor made in place of worship with intent to create enmity) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for reportedly attempting to ‘malign’ Christian and Muslim communities. Kalicharan Maharaj, Milind Ekbote, Mohan Shete, Nandkishor Ekbote, and Dipak Nagpure are the others who have been accused of ‘hate speech’ by the police.

Captain Digendra Kumar helped secure a crucial victory in the Battle of Tololing and was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his contribution to the 1999 Kargil war.

The Quint quotes his Maha Vir Chakra citation:

“On 13 June 1999, when the assault group was nearing its objective, it came under effective enemy fire of well concealed universal machine gun, heavy machine gun and other small arms leading to heavy casualties in the assault group. Naik Digendra Kumar was hit by a bullet in his left arm. Undaunted and unmindful of his own injury, he kept firing with one hand and brought down effective and accurate light machine gun fire on the enemy. His accurate fire kept the enemy’s head down while his own men advanced towards the objective. Finally, under his effective covering fire, own troops physically assaulted the enemy position and cleared it after a fierce hand-to-hand fight.”

It is certainly appalling that the ‘secular’ Uddhav Thackeray government has shown scant respect for a Kargil war hero. Only in Bharat can ‘secular’ governments spin merely talking about Islamists and missionaries as ‘hate speech’ despite the fact that both Islamists and missionaries spew venom against and target Hindus for conversion every day.
