Immigrant workers living in dog kennels: Kerala

Shyam Sundar, a guest worker, lives in a dog kennel for rent. He has been staying in the kennel next to a wealthy landowner’s house in Piravom municipality in the Ernakulam district of Kerala for three months. The Hindu man is a West Bengal native.

Shyam Sunder said other guest workers live on rent in the old house behind the landlord. Shyam said he was forced to live in the kennel, paying 500 rupees because he did not have money to stay in the rented house.

It has been four years since Shyam Sundar came to Kerala. When he arrived in Piravom, he did not have any money with him. Shyam Sunder said that the house owner rented the old kennel for Rs.500 in this situation.

Shyam Sunder cooks, sleeps, and relaxes inside this tiny cage. A metal grill was around for the dog to see the outside world. It is protected from rain and cold by being covered with cardboard. There is a lock to secure the cage.

At the same time, The landlord who collects rent for the kennel lives in a palatial bungalow next door. The house owner said there were many guest workers in Piravom. He admitted there was not enough accommodation in the town. He added that immigrant workers lived in his old house for 2000 and 3000 rupees. The wealthy landlord claimed he did not know someone lived in his old doghouse.

Most landowners in the locality are Christians. They own acres of land and cultivate rubber/coconut trees and pineapples. These industries need substantial manpower for maintenance, tapping and harvesting. The owners are always on the lookout for cheap labour.

The images made many wonder if this is happening in the self-proclaimed Number One Kerala. The radical left led by the communists has destroyed West Bengal, Bharat’s economic powerhouse, until a few decades ago.

Shyam Sundar’s home is six hours from Kolkata. He has never attended school. Naturally, some Keralites exploited him.

Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress goons now ensure a genocide of these former communist local leaders. These unlucky ones end up in different parts of the country and live in appalling conditions. While green communists and other political outfits always welcome Islamists, the Hindu ones are often mistreated.

Following the news, Municipal authorities, the police and locals reached the place. Locals said that they cannot accept the action of the house owner by renting the dog house in such a bad situation. The police called the house’s owner but did not initiate any action against the greedy man.

V. Sivankutty, Minister for General Education and Labour, directed the Labour Commissioner to investigate and submit a report immediately. The police shifted him to the rented house of another guest worker, Shyam Sundar’s friend.
