Elephant smuggling from West Bengal is going on, Petition filed in the Calcutta High Court

Amid an ongoing CBI investigation and several arrests in the cow smuggling case, the issue of elephant smuggling has come to light. An organisation alleged that elephants are being smuggled from West Bengal to different states of Bharat and other Countries. A petition has already been filed in the Calcutta High Court in this matter.

Cape Foundation, an animal-loving NGO, filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court seeking an investigation. A lawyer representing the organisation said in the high court that around 26 to 28 elephants have been smuggled out of West Bengal over the past few years. The elephants are sold in different states and even other countries. The reason behind easy access to elephants is the closure of varying circus companies, stated the lawyer on behalf of the petitioner.

Citing elephants as the property of the State, the lawyer stated that without the government’s consent, it’s illegal to sell them. The lawyer also presented the recent selling of three elephants from West Bengal to Bihar. Also, several elephants of circus companies are missing, and the lawyer demanded the court’s interference in this matter.

Hearing the arguments, the Judge expressed his concerns and observed that elephants and men have an inner bond over the ages. On the 27th of September, the matter will be presented before the court.
