Criminal Kareem shielded by mob that attacked Police: Bihar

On 6 January, Bihar Police officials from Gaya DIU went to arrest a wanted criminal named Mohammed Sham Kareem in Jehanabad. When they tried to apprehend him on Fida Hussain Road, a group of angry people attacked the officials, allowing the criminal to escape. Later, the Nagar Thana Police arrested one person involved in the mob.

Kareem is wanted for theft and dacoity, and he has been on the run for a year. A police official was reportedly injured during the incident. The Chief Inspector of Nagar Thana, Nikhil Kumar, mentioned that an inquiry into the matter has been initiated. Reports suggest that the police located Kareem using cell towers at Fida Hussain Road, where he had come for a family function.

The DIU officials arrived in civilian clothes, and due to a communication issue, the local police couldn’t reach them, leading to a confrontation with the mob. Although the local police eventually gained control, Kareem had already escaped. Videos of the incident circulated on social media, showing police officials in plain clothes trying to protect themselves from the mob. The SDPO of Jehanabad stated that the mob may have ‘misunderstood’ the situation as the police officials were not in uniform, resulting in the attack. In the chaos, the wanted criminal managed to flee.
