Assam: Congress filed FIR against senior journalist Atin Das for remarks on Gandhi

Journalist Atin Das, senior journalist finds himself in a growing controversy after his remarks went viral and sparked outrage among congress supporters and leaders. Alleging the remarks offensive and disrespectful, yesterday, on 16th of August, the Cachar District Youth Congress filed a written complaint in Silchar Sadar Police Station. Also, leaders of Youth Congress gave an ultimatum of 24 hours to arrest the journalist.

Das allegedly made a statement on Gandhi on 14th of August which was published on 15th of August in Bengali newspaper “Dainik Samayik Prasanga”. In his statements, Atin Das referred Gandhi “a spy of British” and held him responsible for the Partition of Bharat.

Offended by that remarks, Youth Congress Unit of Cachar District filed an FIR in Silchar Sadar Police Station against the journalist Atin Das. Youth Congress member, Ranjit Debnath expressed his anger and rants against the journalist in Press Meet and labeled him as a ‘successor to Nathuram Godse’. Youth Congress workers also issued an ultimatum of 24 hours to the Police to arrest Das, warning that the Administration would be responsible for any potential breach of Law and Order situation in the district.

In a program on 14th August, senior journalist Atin Das said, “The belief of Gandhi as a leader of non-violence is false as he supported violent activities of Britishers. During his stay in South Africa, Gandhi supported the British during the Boer War. Netaji had to leave Bharat because of Gandhi. If Netaji had stayed in Bharat, the country would not have divided.”

Notably, Atin Das is a senior journalist. He is renowned in Assam. He is also the founder of Silchar Press Club and regularly writes in different Bengali newspapers in Assam.
