“Why RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat called out ‘woke’ people”, India Today, October 26, 2023:

“Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat used his annual Vijayadashami speech on October 24 to launch a scathing attack on “cultural Marxists or woke” people.

Terming them “selfish, discriminatory and deceitful forces”, the RSS chief said such people were plunging the nation into a state of “confusion, chaos, and corruption” to fulfil their sectarian interests after taking control of the media and academia.

The word woke is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English that refers to activism creating awareness of racial prejudice and discrimination. Gaining currency in the US at the beginning of this century, it has come to be associated with awareness of various social inequalities, such as racial justice, sexism and LGBTIQA+ rights. In doing so, the movement has become synonymous with many ideas of the American Left involving identity politics……”
