“Bihar is set to issue new technologically advanced voter ID cards to all eligible voters following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. The initiative will begin once the SIR process, currently underway in the state, is completed. The Election Commission has not yet announced a timeline for issuing the new cards.
According to senior officials in the commission, voters were asked to submit their latest photographs while filling out the electoral roll forms. These photographs will be included on the new voter ID cards. The draft electoral rolls for Bihar were published on August 1, showing a total of 7.24 crore voters in the state. The final list is scheduled for publication on September 30.
Bihar is likely to hold assembly elections between late October and mid-November, with the current assembly’s term ending on November 22. Formation of the new assembly before this date is mandatory.
