West Bengal: Minor Hindu Girl Dies by Suicide in Cooch Behar Allegedly After Blackmail and Threats, The Police Arrested Accused Humayun Kabir Miyan

A tragic incident has shaken the Jamaldah area under the jurisdiction of Mekhliganj Police Station in Cooch Behar district, where a 15-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide following sustained threats and blackmail.

The deceased, identified as Shefali Barman, was a resident of Jamaldah and a student of Jamaldah Tulsi Devi High School. She had recently appeared for the Madhyamik Examination this year, marking an important milestone in her academic journey.

According to family sources, Shefali had been in contact with a man identified as Humayun Kabir Miyan. It is alleged that he initially concealed his identity and developed a relationship with the minor. When Shefali reportedly discovered what her family describes as his “real identity,” she decided to end the relationship.

Following the breakup, the accused allegedly began threatening her repeatedly, pressuring her to elope and marry him. Family members claim that he warned her of dire consequences, including threats to her life, if she refused.

Unable to cope with what relatives describe as continuous intimidation and psychological pressure, Shefali allegedly took the extreme step on February 12, 2026.

Her mother has since filed a formal complaint at Mekhliganj Police Station. Police sources confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. Officials are expected to examine phone records, digital communications, and statements from family members and acquaintances as part of the probe.

The incident has sparked outrage and grief in the local community, raising serious concerns about online relationships, coercion, and the vulnerability of minors to psychological harassment. Residents have demanded swift action and strict punishment if the allegations are proven.

Authorities have urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and assured that appropriate legal steps will be taken based on evidence gathered during the investigation.

The tragic death of a young student at the threshold of her future has once again brought attention to the urgent need for stronger safeguards against harassment and coercion targeting minors.

Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
