“The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) recently released a set of recommendations in connection with the madarsa education system in India. The main focus of the report is to ensure that all children, including those who attend madarsas, receive a formal and quality education as per the Right to Education Act, 2009.
Notably, the NCPCR has raised concerns multiple times over the exclusion of madarsa students from the formal education system. Such exclusions often lead to educational deprivation and violations of their rights.
The Right to Education Act (RTE) was introduced under Article 21A of the Constitution of India in 2009. As per the RTE Act, every child between the ages of 6 and 14 has the right to free and compulsory education. However, in 2012, the Government of India introduced an amendment to the Act that exempted minority institutions, such as madarsas, from its provisions……”
