Though there are many small and large temples dedicated to Thanthondri Amman, the main temple is located in Gobichettipalayam in Erode District. Since this Amman is believed to have manifested Herself, the name Thanthondri Amman is derived from this belief.
The worship of Thanthondri Amman is popular throughout Tamil Nadu and is also followed by Tamil-speaking people living in foreign countries. Devotees believe that worshipping Thanthondri Amman helps resolve their problems immediately. Amman is known by various names, one of which is Thanthondri Amman. She is considered the Supreme Being among all other Devis and Devatas. According to the Puranas, Amman is regarded as the original Creator, Preserver, and Destroyer of the entire universe.
Another famous temple dedicated to Thanthondri Amman is situated near my residence in Chennai’s Agaram, near Perambur Loco Works. This Amman temple is particularly popular among the people of the Perambur locality. Devotees visit this temple mainly to seek fulfilment in marriage, long life, relief from various health-related problems, and happiness in their lives. Apart from the main shrine of Amman, several other shrines dedicated to Vinayaka, Muruga, Durga, and Navagraha are also found inside the temple.
Inside the temple complex, a large statue of Ayyanar has been installed. Devotees commonly worship Ayyanar with great faith. They believe that by worshipping Him, He will grant them the courage and strength to withstand the problems and difficulties in their lives. They also believe that He will safeguard them from their enemies.
Thee Midhi (walking on hot coals) is a popular ritual at this temple and is performed during the month of Aadi. The Thee Midhi festival is also live-telecast on television. The most favoured offering is Pongal, which is mostly cooked within the temple complex. Kuzh is also offered by devotees to Amman, and they seek the divine blessings of Amman.
