Tension escalated in Solapur village, Hukkeri taluk, on the 13th of October Sunday evening as violence erupted during the peaceful immersion procession of a Durga Matha vigraha, marking the culmination of nine days of Navratri festivities. Based on the reports from Hosakannada, the incident occurred when the procession passing by a mosque was attacked by an intolerant group of Islamists. The attackers allegedly reacted violently to a song played to honour Shivaji’s victory over Afzal Khan, a common part of such processions.
This sudden assault by the radical Islamist elements, driven by religious intolerance, mirrors other recent attacks on Hindu traditions and festivities across various regions, highlighting the growing pattern of aggression towards Hindu celebrations.
According to local sources, the procession, which had been peaceful until that point, escalated when the music offended members of the Islamic community gathered at the mosque. In response, a group allegedly attacked the Hindu participants of the procession with rods and other sharp weapons. This sudden outburst of violence led to chaos, with more than five motorcycles and two cars being damaged in the melee.
Eyewitnesses reported that the situation spiralled out of control rapidly, with both sides exchanging blows. Police were notified immediately and arrived on the scene to diffuse the violence. Law enforcement resorted to a lathi charge to bring the situation under control. “We had to act swiftly to prevent further escalation. The situation is now under control, but tensions are still high,” said a police official at the site.
So far, no arrests have been made, but heavy police presence has been deployed in the village to prevent any further incidents. Authorities have assured the public that investigations are underway, and those responsible for inciting violence will be held accountable. “We are committed to ensuring peace in the region. The police are conducting a thorough investigation,” the official added.
The incident has left a sense of unease in the village, which had been celebrating Navratri in harmony until the clash. Residents are calling for peace and restraint to avoid further communal tensions. Local leaders from both communities are expected to meet to discuss measures to prevent such incidents from recurring.
This recent attack in Hukkeri is part of a disturbing trend of Islamist aggression across Bharat, where Hindu religious processions have increasingly become targets of violence. Stone pelting on Ganapati processions, like the one in Mandya, recalls the dark days of Tipu Sultan’s rule, when Hindus faced similar assaults. In Rajasthan, a Hindu procession was attacked with stones hurled from inside a Jama Masjid, further demonstrating how Islamists are perpetrating such crimes. These incidents highlight the growing intolerance towards Hindu traditions and the urgent need for stronger measures to protect communal harmony.
