Massive protests by Bangladeshi Hindus erupt amid escalating violence against them

In Bangladesh, a wave of mass protests has erupted following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her subsequent flight to India. The turmoil has intensified violence against the Hindu community, resulting in widespread demonstrations across the country.

On August 9, 2024, demonstrators in Dhaka blocked a major intersection while chanting “Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna,” in a call for peace and unity.

On August 10, hundreds of thousands of Hindus took to the streets in Dhaka and Chittagong, demanding immediate protection and justice. The demonstrations have been fueled by a surge in attacks on Hindu homes, businesses, and temples, with reports indicating over 205 incidents across 52 districts since Hasina’s departure on August 5. The violence has resulted in injuries to hundreds and the deaths of at least two Hindu leaders affiliated with Hasina’s Awami League party.

Similar demonstrations took place internationally, with rallies in the US and the UK expressing support for the Bangladeshi Hindus.
