A 33-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped and murdered by her boyfriend Mohammed Akhtar on the night of Jan 1 in Dumka, Jharkhand. The two had an argument while celebrating a New Year’s party, leading to her death as per an AajTak report.

The victim’s father stated that his daughter was pursuing her B. Ed course in preparation to become a teacher and staying in a rented accommodation in Bandhpada locality. She was the youngest among 6 siblings. The father said that there were clear signs of assault on his daughter’s body indicating she was murdered and asked for justice to be delivered.

Some sources state that she belonged to a janjatiya (ST/tribal) community, and was allegedly gangraped by Akhtar and 4 of his friends before being murdered. Although there is no official confirmation of this as yet, Dumka SP Pitambar Singh Kherwar confirmed that Akhtar and 4 other men have been arrested and sexual assault will be confirmed depending on post-mortem results.

The victim had come to her girlfriend’s house and was partying with two other youth before her boyfriend Md. Akhtar arrived. Those two youth left soon after his arrival, said the girlfriend, but later Akhtar and the victim had an argument and he assaulted her. The next morning, the friend found the victim’s body under the bed.

Akhtar lives in Sri Ram Pada locality of the town and works as a flower decorator. He goes by the nickname ‘Chiku’ and got introduced to the victim through work.

This crime in Dumka comes a little over an year after the horrific murder of Class 12 student Ankita Singh by her stalker Shahrukh in the same town. Ankita was burnt alive by Shahrukh with the help of his friend Naeem aka ‘Chotu’, who himself had abducted a girl in 2021 and threatened to ‘send her to Dubai’ if she did not marry him. Naeem had been arrested for that crime, but was soon released on bail and continued to threaten the girl and her lawyer after getting out of jail.
