In a deeply disturbing incident ahead of the upcoming Ram Navami celebrations, a Murti of Prabhu Ram being sculpted in Nandigram, West Bengal, was found vandalised on the morning of 22nd of March, with its head severed and stolen by unidentified miscreants. The act has triggered anger and anxiety among local residents, raising fresh concerns over religious harmony in the region.
The incident occurred at Veturia bus stand in Nandigram Block 2, where artisans had been working on the Murti for the festival. According to locals, the structure was left at the site overnight after work was paused. Upon returning the next morning, workers discovered that the head of the nearly completed idol had been brutally cut off and taken away.
Residents have described the act as a direct attack on religious sentiments, with many expressing outrage and fear over the growing pattern of such incidents. The atmosphere in the area has since become tense, particularly given Nandigram’s politically sensitive background and its significance in West Bengal’s electoral landscape.
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari strongly condemned the incident, alleging that repeated attacks on Hindu religious symbols have become “routine” in the state. He criticised the administration, accusing it of inaction and failure to prevent such occurrences, and called for unity among the community in response.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the vandalism. However, as of now, no arrests have been reported. Locals have questioned the urgency and seriousness of the response, demanding swift action to identify and punish those responsible.
The incident comes at a time when Ram Navami preparations are underway across West Bengal, often accompanied by heightened political and social sensitivities. With elections on the horizon, Nandigram once again finds itself at the centre of a volatile mix of faith, politics, and public sentiment.
