West Bengal: Massive Explosion in a firecracker factory in North 24 Parganas, 8 dead

After the Egra of Purba Medinipur district, a massive explosion occurred in a firecracker factory situated at Nilganj area under Duttapukur Police Station of North 24 Parganas district. Till now, eight people have died, and several others have been injured.

On Sunday(27 August) morning, the blast occurred in the firecracker factory- a two-storied building. The explosion was so massive that several houses got damaged. The whole building is just blown off, and dead bodies of workers of the factory are found scattered here and there.

After receiving the news, the fire brigade and the Police reached the spot. Five dead bodies were recovered from the debris, and three others died later in the hospital. Also, locals joined hands to recover the dead and injured.

Meanwhile, locals are outraged by the Police and administration. As the factory is in a residential area, several houses got damaged in the blast. Many locals expressed anger and said, “The Police and administration know everything. By taking bribes, they allowed the factory to run. Local political leaders are involved in this business. Already our houses got damaged. Who will compensate for this?”

Some said, “Why a firecracker factory was running in a residential area? Why so many firecrackers and explosives were allowed to stack in that factory? We want an answer from the Police and administration.”

Notably, an explosion in legal and illegal firecracker factories is happening back to back. West Bengal has been rocked with several similar incidents in the recent past. In May this year, nine people died, and seven were injured in an explosion in a firecracker factory in Egra of Purba Medinipur district.
