The body of a teenage girl was recovered from her house on Friday (3 November) in the Sampoorna Nagar police station area of Uttar Pradesh’s (UP) Lakhimpur Kheri district. As per reports, the teenage girl took the extreme step as she was being pressured to convert to Islam.
Following the post-mortem, Family members protested by keeping the body of the teen on the road, blocking the road, and demanding the arrest of the accused. Within no time, a huge crowd gathered at the spot, and the police had to resort to a lathi charge. The angry mob also pelted stones at the police and set shops on fire. The situation remained tense.
As soon as the information was received, the police immediately reached the spot and tried to convince the family members and villagers. After the arrest of the accused, the relatives of the deceased teen demanded they be hanged to death and their houses be bulldozed. Police from several police stations, including SDM Kartikeya Singh and other police officers, reached the spot to control the situation.
The family members alleged that an objectionable video of the girl was made viral by youths from the Muslim community. Furthermore, the girl was being repeatedly blackmailed by the accused youth. The post-mortem report of the girl’s body states hanging as the cause of the victim’s death.
The elder sister of the deceased informed the media that the accused continuously put pressure on her sister to convert to Islam. Her sister was being tortured continuously by Zohid Akhtar and his associates, forcing her to hang herself. At present, the police have registered a case under POCSO and arrested one accused. Three accused are still said to be absconding. It must be highlighted that many cases related to religious conversion have come to light in the areas adjacent to the Nepal border.
