Somnath (26) attacked and killed at Patiala Gate; police detain four: Punjab

A young man named Somnath (26) was brutally murdered at Patiala gate late on Monday night in Bathinda, Punjab. The deceased was attacked on the head with sharp weapons. Sahara Jan Seva’s workers got him admitted to the civil hospital, but he died during treatment.

After receiving information about the murder, the police team also reached the spot at around 2 o’clock. At the same time, in the morning, the police detained about four people living with the said youth and started questioning them, but the details regarding the murderer have not been revealed yet. The relatives of the deceased gathered on Tuesday and refused to perform the last rites until the accused were caught and punished.

On receiving information about the murder of the youth belonging to the Valmiki community, Municipal Corporation sanitation workers and Sewerage Union workers also reached the spot. They also stated that unless the police administration arrests the accused who murdered the youth, they will not allow the last rites of the deceased to be performed. The dead young man was the nephew of Veerbhan, who was the head of the Safai Sevak Union in the Municipal Corporation about six times.

Veerbhan said that his nephew Somnath, a resident of Sanjay Nagar, was married and had three children. He worked in a shop but had no enmity with anyone. Last Monday, after having dinner, he had gone towards Patiala Gate for a walk. When he did not return for a long time, his family members came to call him, but he said that he would be coming after some time.

Around 11.30 pm, some informers came from near Patiala gate and said that someone had murdered Somnath. When they reached the spot, Sahara Jan Seva workers picked up an injured Somnath and took him to the civil hospital. Somnath was brought to the hospital in a critical condition, and he died after some time. The police have currently detained four people. Their interrogation is ongoing.

At the same time, representatives of the Safai Sevak Union said that although the police administration officials have reached the spot and have started the investigation, they will not allow the last rites of the deceased to be performed until the accused are arrested. On the other hand, the police say that the matter is being investigated.

Some people have been detained and interrogated. Sandeep Goyal of Sahara Jan Seva said that he had taken Somnath, who was lying in a critical condition at Patiala gate at night, to the hospital. He was attacked in the head with sharp weapons.
