Police officer assaults social worker & lawyer who wanted to register a grooming jihad complaint: Thane

A social worker and lawyer were reportedly assaulted by a police officer inside the Ulhasnagar police station. The duo had accompanied the parents of a 24-year-old Hindu girl who is said to have eloped with a 26-year-old Muslim youth on October 7. The girl’s family and the duo alleged this was a case of grooming jihad.

It has come to light that the lawyer and social worker had to step in after the cops refused to register a complaint when the girl’s parents visited the police station saying she was an adult. Social activist Anil Tiwari and lawyer Shiva Pandey wanted the cops to at least register a case of theft as she had taken away valuables when she left.

Tiwari and Pandey said they were taken to a room where the police officer and two of his staff snatched away their mobile phones and beat them up. “When we demanded the police to register at least a theft case, the cops took me and lawyer Shiva Pandey into a room where a police inspector level officer with two of his staff snatched our mobile phones and started beaten up and later made us sit outside the locker room like an accused”, ToI quotes Tiwari as saying.

On Tuesday (October 25), BJP MLA Nitesh Rane visited the Ulhasnagar police station along with Tiwari, Pandey, and the girl’s parents to demand action on the matter. Rane met ACP Motichand Rathod and demanded action in the grooming cases as well as against the errant officers who misbehaved with the activist and lawyer.

“To stop Love Jihad cases in Maharashtra, I will raise the issue in assembly to bring the law and act in Maharashtra on the line of UP, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. The ACP assured us that action would be taken against policemen who assaulted the lawyer and activist and if action is not taken then I will complain to CM and Deputy CM”, Rane told reports.

On the other hand, ACP Rathod informed the media that an investigation has been ordered into the alleged misbehaviour of the officer and action would be taken against him if he was found guilty. However, he said that they had sent a team to West Bengal’s Birbhum District to bring back the missing girl. But she is said to have informed the local police that she had left the home of her own will and she wants to get married.
