Mumbai Police Arrest 22-Year-Old Danish Khan for Egg-Throwing at Ganesh Procession in Mazgaon

In a swift operation that underscored the Mumbai Police’s resolve to maintain communal harmony during the festive season, the Byculla (Bhaykhala) police arrested 22-year-old Danish Sher Khan within 36 hours of an egg-throwing incident that targeted a Ganesh arrival procession in the Mazgaon area on the night of August 23, 2026. The accused, apprehended after intensive technical surveillance and the deployment of five dedicated investigation teams, has reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.

The Incident: Eggs Hurled at ‘Mazgaoncha Morya’ Procession

On the night of August 23, 2026, the ‘Mazgaoncha Morya’ Ganpati Mandal was conducting its Shri Ganesh Aagman Shobha Yatra through the narrow lanes of Mazgaon, a densely populated neighbourhood in South Mumbai with a historically mixed demographic profile. The procession, accompanied by traditional dhol-tasha beats and hundreds of devotees, was proceeding peacefully when, at approximately 9:40 PM, eggs were suddenly hurled from an elevated position — reportedly from a residential building overlooking the procession route — targeting the devotees and the deity’s palanquin.

Eyewitnesses described a sudden commotion as eggs splattered on the road, on the deity’s carriage, and on several devotees. The incident instantly sparked tension in the area, with agitated participants demanding immediate police action. The situation threatened to escalate into a law-and-order situation, given the charged atmosphere surrounding the Ganesh festival.

Senior police officials who rushed to the spot managed to pacify the crowd and assured them of swift action. The procession was allowed to proceed under heavy police deployment after a brief pause.

FIR Registered Under BNS Provisions

Taking cognisance of the incident’s potential to disturb public order and communal harmony, the Bhaykhala Police Station registered FIR No. 520/2026 under Sections 299 and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 — the new criminal law framework that replaced the Indian Penal Code on July 1, 2024.

  • Section 299 (BNS) corresponds to the erstwhile Section 295A IPC — deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs. The offence is cognisable, non-bailable, and carries a maximum punishment of three years’ imprisonment, or fine, or both.
  • Section 196 (BNS) corresponds to the erstwhile Section 153A IPC — promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony. This is also a cognisable, non-bailable offence punishable with up to three years’ imprisonment, or fine, or both; if committed in a place of worship or during religious ceremonies, the punishment extends to five years.

The invocation of these stringent provisions — both non-bailable — signals the seriousness of the incident, viewing it not merely as a prank but as a deliberate attempt to incite communal tension during a Hindu religious festival.

Conclusion: A Test Case for Communal Harmony and Rule of Law

The arrest of Danish Sher Khan within 36 hours of the egg-throwing incident at the Mazgaoncha Morya Ganesh procession stands as a case study in rapid, technology-driven policing. By invoking stringent BNS provisions, deploying specialised teams, leveraging technical intelligence, and engaging community leadership, the Mumbai Police managed to apprehend the perpetrator, secure a confession, and — crucially — prevent a communal conflagration.

As the legal process unfolds, the case will test the deterrent efficacy of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in addressing hate-motivated offences during Hindu religious festivals. For now, the Mazgaoncha Morya procession continues its annual journey — under tighter security, but with the community’s faith in the rule of law reinforced.
