Mizoram: NIA busts international arms smuggling network, arrests key accused

In a significant breakthrough, the National Investigation Agency(NIA), on the 1st of February, Thursday, busted a cross-border smuggling network of arms, ammunition and explosives. The NIA officers also arrested the main accused in the case.

The accused has been identified as Lalngaihawma, a resident of the Mamit area of Mizoram. He was arrested from Aizawl following inputs regarding the operations of a well-organised racket of illegal arms and ammunition supply. The racket allegedly operates in certain Northeastern States of Bharat.

The accused, along with others, was engaged in the trafficking of arms, ammunition and explosives, not only in the Northeastern States but also across the border. As per the investigation agency, the accused was working in collusion with various operatives, including insurgent groups situated across the international border.

Notably, the NIA had started an investigation after filing a case(RC-31/2023/NIA/DLI) on December 26, 2023, under section 120B of IPC, section 18 of UAPA, section 6 of Explosives Act and section 25(1)(a) of Arms Act.

Currently, further investigations to unearth the entire racket are in progress.
