Kolkata: Hajibullah stole bus, rams car, killed Rathi family; arrested

Three members of a family were killed when a bus rammed their car. The incident happened in Kolkata’s VIP Road in the early hours of Monday.

The deceased were identified as Shiva Shankar Rathi(65), his mother Kamala Rathi(73) and his son Srivatsa Rathi(23), an MBA student.

As per information, Shiva Shankar with his family members were returning from his daughter’s wedding in Rajarhat. Their car driver Ankit Kumar Mahato is critical and is undergoing treatment.

An police official said, “Around 1.30 am, an information was received that a private bus was stolen from the Baguihati Bus stand. The bus was traced around 3am, but upon seeing the police, the driver drove it at a high speed.” Then the bus rammed into the car carrying the Rathi family at the Clock Tower signal. The bus then moved towards Ultadanga at a high speed and hit a stone chips laden truck. There the driver was nabbed.

The driver is identified as Muhammad Habibullah Molla.

A police official further said, “According to our preliminary investigation, the man who stole the bus, drove it earlier and was expelled over his drinking habit.”

A case was registered in connection with the incident. However, the victims’ family accused the police of hiding facts and sought CCTV footage of the incident.
