In a suspected case of honour killing, a youth has been murdered by his girlfriend’s relatives on the outskirts of Hyderabad, Telangana.
Devarakonda Harish, who works as a DJ sound system operator, was stabbed to death allegedly by his girlfriend Manisha’s relatives in Dullapally area under the limits of Pet Basheerabad police station of Cyberabad police commissionerate on Wednesday night. The body was identified later.
Harish was staying in the area for the last six months. He was earlier residing in Yellareddyguda in Hyderabad, where he fell in love with Manisha, who belongs to an OBC community.
As the girl’s family rejected the marriage proposal, Harish shifted to Dullapally. He, however, continued meeting the girl, and they eloped a few days back.
Harish’s parents have blamed the girl’s family for the murder. They alleged that the girl’s relatives killed Harish in front of the girl, and after the murder took her away.
As per Indian Express, an officer from Petbasheerabad police station said Manisha’s brother is the prime suspect in the case. “The incident happened when the two came to our area three days ago after they eloped. On learning about their whereabouts, her brother came and hacked Harish to death. A knife used in the offence has been recovered. Five people are in our custody and an investigation is on,” he said.
Times of India has reported that main accused Deendayal and 8 others have been arrested, out of total 11 accused.

News agency IANS had earlier reported that this honor killing was carried out after an ‘interfaith’ marriage, and HinduPost had republished the same, as did other news outlets like Free Press Journal. But as per latest reports, it is now clear that this honor killing does not involve an ‘inter-faith’ relationship. The HinduPost story has been updated accordingly.
In a similar murder from Hyderabad last year, relatives of a Muslim woman Ashrin Sultana killed her 25-year-old Hindu SC (‘Dalit’) husband B Nagaraju in the middle of the road right in front of her eyes.
