10 tragic incidents of Hindu girls murdered by Islamists for rejecting marriage proposals

These cases shed light on instances where Hindu girls were murdered by Islamists because they rejected their marriage proposals. Each case highlights the tragic consequences of such rejections.

Here are some cases

  • Chayanika Kumari, a 30-year-old woman from Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, was strangled to death by her ‘boyfriend’ Mirza Rafiqul Haque, a doctor, for refusing to convert to Islam and marry him. The incident took place in November, when Haque, after a three-year-long relationship, killed Chayanika when she refused his marriage proposal. Haque then packed her body into a suitcase and left it at the Tata Nagar railway station. Chayanika had taken leave from work to meet a relative in Kolkata but did not inform her family about it. Haque, who had rented a room in Hotel Ginger in Jamshedpur, met Chayanika there and after she rejected his proposal, he killed her in a fit of anger. Chayanika’s family revealed that Haque had been pressuring her to convert and marry him.
  • On May 28, in Rohini’s Shahbad Dairy area, a 16-year-old girl was brutally stabbed more than 20 times by her former boyfriend, Sahil, an AC and refrigerator mechanic, right outside her home. The incident was captured on CCTV. Sahil attacked the girl as she entered her house from the street, repeatedly stabbing her and hitting her with a stone. Despite the brutal nature of the attack, no one intervened. The girl’s body was found lying on the road in a pool of blood. Sahil was arrested from Uttar Pradesh’s (UP) Bulandshahr city, and an FIR was lodged under Section 302 of the IPC. The girl’s mother demanded justice for her daughter and called for a death sentence for the culprit.
  • On April 1, 2023, in UP’s Varanasi, an SC girl named Sonam was murdered by Rizwan, who then threw her body into a sewer. Rizwan was reportedly upset because Sonam’s family did not approve of their relationship due to religious differences. Rizwan, who worked as a weaver, allegedly wanted to marry Sonam, but her family objected because he was Muslim. The incident occurred in the Jaitpura police station area of Varanasi, sparking protests from Sonam’s family demanding justice. Rizwan has been taken into custody.
  • In Katihar, Bihar, female policeman Prabha Bharti was murdered over alleged love jihad. The accused, Arshad alias Chhotu, forcibly pressured Prabha to marry him after a love affair, which she opposed. On February 8, Arshad, along with seven others, shot Prabha multiple times on Bhatwara Highway 81 in the Kodha police station area and fled in a luxury car. After extensive CCTV footage analysis, the police arrested the accused from Maharashtra’s Nagpur. So far, five people have been arrested in connection with the case.
  • In UP, Lucknow Police arrested Sufiyan, the accused in the Nidhi Gupta murder case, after an encounter in Thakurganj. Sufiyan was trying to escape and was shot in the leg during the encounter. He was arrested and taken to the trauma centre for treatment. Sufiyan was accused of pressuring Nidhi for religious conversion and marriage. Nidhi’s family alleged that Sufiyan threw her from the fourth floor, leading to her death. The police had been searching for Sufiyan, and after the encounter, he was arrested.
  • In Dumka, Jharkhand, Shahrukh burnt alive a 12th-class girl student named Ankita after she rejected his proposal, leading to her death. Shahrukh was arrested, but he showed no remorse and was seen laughing in police custody. It was revealed that Shahrukh had been harassing Ankita for two years, creating fear and distress for her. Ankita had reported his actions to the police five days before her death. The incident sparked protests, with people demanding justice and stricter measures against such crimes.
  • In Una district, Himachal Pradesh, 15-year-old girl Prachi Rana was brutally murdered in her home by Asif Mohammed, a newspaper vendor who had been harassing her for two years. Prachi rejected Asif’s proposal, leading to the crime. Asif slit Prachi’s throat when she resisted his advances and fled the scene. He was later arrested, with locals demanding stricter punishment. The incident sparked outrage, with people questioning the police’s assertion that there was no religious angle to the crime.
  • In Rohini, North West Delhi, a young Hindu girl named Neetu was brutally murdered by her friend Layeek Khan on February 19 after she rejected his marriage proposal. Layeek, known as Safeeq Khan, attacked Neetu with a hammer at her home in the Begum Vihar area. Neetu’s cousin filed a complaint, leading to an FIR against Layeek Khan under IPC section 302.
  • In UP’s Bijnor, 26-year-old Shahzad, a drug addict, was arrested for the murder of 24-year-old national-level Kho-Kho player Babli. Shahzad attempted to rape Babli but when he failed, he killed her. He confessed to the crime. The police recovered evidence including Babli’s phone, a blood-stained shirt, and a rope from Shahzad’s house.
  • In Uttarakhand’s Roorkee, 19-year-old Nidhi Paswan was brutally murdered in her house. She was stalked by Haider Ali, who, along with two friends, killed her after she rejected his marriage proposal. The incident occurred on April 24, 2021, in the Ganganagar police station area.
