In Noida, a 50-year-old e-rickshaw driver, Mehdi Hasan, was attacked by two men on Saturday night. The men, identified as Anuj Kumar and Nitin Besla, stabbed Hasan multiple times in the stomach. The incident happened in Sector 49, and the attackers surrendered to the police outside a local police outpost. It has come to light that they were fed up with the constant harassment of Hasan.
Hasan was still alive when taken to the hospital but passed away later. According to Additional DCP Manish Mishra, the attack resulted from an old feud between Hasan and one of the attackers. The confrontation occurred around 9 pm when Hasan was on his way home. An argument escalated into a fight, and Anuj stabbed Hasan multiple times with a knife.
The police revealed that there had been ongoing hostility between Hasan’s and Anuj’s families since 2018. In 2018, Hasan had stabbed Anuj’s father, leading to a severe injury. He was arrested on attempt to murder charges and released on bail. The recent attack took place when he was out on bail.
Hasan’s wife attempted to blame Anuj’s father, saying he made ‘derogatory’ comments about their daughter which ‘provoked’ the stabbing by Hasan.
Such incidents of criminals coming out on bail to harass victim families are growing at an alarming pace, and it is a reflection of the failings of our criminal justice & law enforcement system. When people lose faith in the justice system, they invariably turn to vigilantism, which can only lead to anarchy.
