Days after being stabbed by a Muslim classmate, Hindu student Devraj succumbed to his injuries on Monday (August 19). Devraj had been hospitalized following the incident and was undergoing treatment. This tragic update comes a day after his family alleged they were denied access to visit him in the hospital. In response, a large crowd, including Devraj’s family, participated in a rally at Mukherjee Nagar Chowk in Rajasthan’s Udaipur. The rally, marked by slogan chanting, proceeded to MB Hospital, where they demanded that the family be allowed to see Devraj.
The violent incident, which occurred at a government school on Friday, August 16, ignited widespread communal unrest in Udaipur. A Class 10 Muslim student allegedly stabbed another minor, leading to escalating tensions. As news of the stabbing spread, a mob took to the streets, setting vehicles on fire and pelting stones, further aggravating the situation. The motive behind the stabbing at the government school in Bhattiyani Chohatta remains unclear.
Communal tensions in Udaipur heightened as members of several Hindu groups protested the stabbing. In response, the district administration, with police support, swiftly demolished the accused boy’s house using JCB machines on Saturday. Officials justified the demolition, stating that the house was illegally constructed on forest land.
As tensions continued to rise in the evening, markets in areas such as Bapu Bazar, Hathipole, Ghanta Ghar, and Chetak Circle were shut down. Violent elements also attacked a shopping mall, causing damage to the glass gates of several shops. Hundreds gathered outside the government hospital, but the police dispersed the crowd. To maintain order, the police imposed Section 144, prohibiting the assembly of people, and suspended internet services in the city.
