Bhopal: College student alleges deception, rape and conversion pressure by “Shadab” posing as “Aditya”

A disturbing case from Madhya Pradesh’s capital has again put the city’s love jihad cases under the spotlight, after a college student accused a Muslim man of befriending her on Instagram under a false Hindu identity, raping her, blackmailing her with private photos and videos, and later pressuring her to convert and offer namaz.

According to the Jagran report, the woman, who is originally from Betul and was studying in her fourth year of college in Bhopal, met the accused in January 2025 on Instagram, where he introduced himself as “Aditya.” The report says he gradually gained her trust, later lured her to Gwalior on the promise of marriage, and allegedly raped her there before revealing that his real name was Shadab.

How the alleged deception unfolded

The allegation is that the accused used a fake identity for months, presenting himself as a Hindu man to build an emotional relationship with the student. The Jagran report says the complainant later became suspicious, investigated his background, and discovered his real identity only after the alleged assault and threats had already occurred.

The report further states that the accused allegedly used obscene photos and videos to silence her, threatened to make them viral, and pressured her into religious conversion. It also says he forced her to read namaz, deepening the seriousness of the allegations beyond rape and intimidation.

Public reporting around similar Bhopal cases shows that police have treated such complaints as serious criminal matters involving rape, blackmail and coercion, often forming special teams or SITs when multiple victims are involved. In a separate Bhopal college case in April 2025, police said two main accused had been arrested and that special investigation teams were formed after allegations of rape, blackmail and forced conversion surfaced.

In another Jagran report from February 2026, Bhopal police arrested a Muslim man accused of posing as “Raja,” befriending a woman, and blackmailing her with private videos; that case shows the city has seen repeated complaints involving false identities, sexual exploitation and digital coercion.

Wider pattern in Madhya Pradesh

The new complaint comes amid a broader political and legal debate in Madhya Pradesh over alleged coercive conversions and what is popularly described as love jihad. State data reported in August 2025 showed that Madhya Pradesh had recorded 283 such cases between January 2020 and July 15, 2025, with 71 involving minor girls.

That same report said Indore and Bhopal together accounted for 40% of the total cases, while the state’s Freedom of Religion Act, 2021, carries penalties of up to 10 years in jail and fines up to Rs 1 lakh. The law also requires prior declaration before conversion, making religious-conversion allegations especially consequential in legal terms.

Significance of the case

This case is likely to draw attention not only because of the allegations of rape and blackmail, but also because the complainant says the accused allegedly exploited a false religious identity and then pushed her toward conversion. In cases like this, the digital trail, call records, chat logs and medical evidence usually become central to the investigation.

It also reflects the growing role of social media in such complaints, with Instagram now frequently mentioned in reports as the starting point for relationship-based fraud and coercion for sexual grooming and religious conversions. In the Bhopal college case, police said the complainant had alleged that private videos were used to blackmail her and her friends, leading investigators to widen the probe.

What is known so far

The available reports indicate that the complainant accused the man of: posing as “Aditya,” forming a relationship online, taking her to Gwalior, raping her, blackmailing her with explicit material, and pressuring her into conversion and namaz.

This case is a grim reminder that online deception can quickly turn into real-world trauma, and it should be treated with the utmost seriousness by investigators and the courts. If the allegations are substantiated, then this is not merely a case of personal betrayal but one of calculated abuse, coercion and exploitation that demands swift punishment, firm legal scrutiny and zero tolerance from society.
