In a joint operation, the Special Task Force(STF) of the Assam Police and the Karimganj Police, led by DIG Parthasarathi Mahanta and SP Partha Protim Das, seized a large quantity of narcotics in Suprakandi. The area comes under the jurisdiction of Nilam Bazar Police Station.
The operation was conducted at around 2 pm on 9th of January. The seizure is one of the most substantial drug busts in North-Eastern Bharat.
The seized items include 5.1 Kilograms of heroin, 64,000 Yaba tablets and four packets of foreign cigarettes. Also, four people were arrested. The Police also seized a vehicle of Mizoram with registration number MZ06A1422, which was used to transport the narcotics.
The arrested persons have been identified as Nur Ahmed, a resident of Patharkandi of Karimganj district of Assam; Zosangliani, Ramngheaka and Lalchamliana of Mizoram.
As per the law enforcement agencies, the seized drugs, with an estimated market value of Rs. 100 Crores, will give a major blow to the illegal drug racket of North-Eastern region.
The Karimganj Police also released an official statement, which reads, “This joint effort by the STF and the Karimganj Police demonstrates our commitment to eradicate the menace of drugs from our region. The seizure of such a substantial quantity is a testament to the diligence and efficiency of our law enforcement agencies.”
Notably, the crackdown on drug trafficking has been intensified in recent months. Law enforcement agencies are conducting operations regularly to curb the illegal drug trade in the state. Sources said, a strong stand against drug trafficking from the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government has given free hand to the law enforcement agencies.
