A horrific case has come to the fore from Udupi that some say resembles how the Ajmer 1992 serial blackmail-rape saga unfolded. Three Muslim female students of Udupi’s prestigious Netra Jyoti Medical College were suspended for placing cameras in the girl’s washroom and slyly recording private moments of Hindu students. Reports say that the pictures/videos of girls taken inside the toilet were circulated on a WhatsApp group, but police has denied this.
There are allegations of the case being hushed up.
The college is located in Udupi’s Ambalpady Bypass and is a private eye hospital as well nursing home. The management suspended Alimatul Shaifa, Shabanaz and Aliya who recorded their co-Hindu students and allegedly shared the video with Muslim males. The suspension came after angry students protested against the violation of privacy.
The manner in which the matter is being treated as an open and shut case by media and politicians who have kept the Manipur issue burning only exposes their double standards. Parallels are being drawn with Ajmer 1992 because at that time hundreds of girls were raped with the blackmail of their illegally solicited nude photos, most of which were taken during the initial rape.
After the incident came to light, there was a conflict between the Hindu students and these Muslim girls. Reports state the perpetrators also got into an altercation with several other students.
As the incident became public, Hindu organizations are said to have met the management asking for stringent action against the accused. Furthermore, the college students urged Udupi Superintendent of Police Akshay Hoque to investigate the matter thoroughly.
Student organization Sarva College Student Shakti has also written to the SP calling for appropriate action. However, no case has been registered as yet.
After Hindu activist Rashmi Samant highlighted the case on Twitter POCSO-accused Mohammad Zubair has incited STSJ mobs against her in what appears to be a repeat of Nupur Sharma’s case. Readers may recall how the Islamist Zubair had unleashed STSJ mobs against Nupur by sharing an edited clip. The Congress government in Karnataka is simply turning a blind eye to the incident.
After Rashmi Samant’s tweet drawing attention to this shocking case from her hometown went viral, police landed up at her home and questioned her parents repeatedly. Rashmi has stated that police were trying to intimidate her with no probable cause.

Police has denied any ‘communal angle’ to this case, terming it a ‘one-off incident’ and seemingly buying the 3 Muslim girls’ defense that it was all just a ‘prank’. Additional Superintendent of Police for Udupi ST Siddalingappa told controversial left-wing news outlet The New Minute that the incident was an isolated one within the college and had no communal aspect to it. “We looked through the phone and didn’t find any such video. We thoroughly investigated the matter and there is no evidence that the video was shared. It was a one-off incident in the college and has no communal angle to it. The purported victim doesn’t want to file a police complaint,” asserted the Additional SP. The college Chairman also denied any communal angle associated with the alleged video. “It was an isolated incident and we have taken action immediately. The students were acquainted with each other,” he said.
However, a troubling account has emerged from a Udupi native who runs an education-related NGO, which indicates a cover-up by authorities. Mithesh Kumar Moodukonaje claims to have spoken to several students of the college and says that several Hindu girls have been recorded in this fashion, starting from around one year back. He has alleged that the victim girls and their parents have been warned not to talk to media and Hindu activists.
