“What fate awaits IIT Bombay professor Suryanarayana Doolla will, in ways that may not be evident now, determine the direction India takes. And that is not an overstatement.
If an investigation proves he is guilty of pushing Sahil Wakode to suicide over caste-related harassment, he will likely be in prison for long, and justice would be served. If, however, he is found to be a conscientious invigilator, things will get tricky.
He has already been targeted, publicly vilified, and subjected to the severest legal and administrative action possible before an investigation. But if Professor Doolla is proven right, politics may never forgive him for enforcing examination rules.
Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are a huge vote bank. Politicians may cave in to accommodate outrage from Ambedkarites and the far-Left and make rules further vulnerable to misuse. And that would only mean irreparable damage to the entire educational ecosystem.
First, it will normalise cheating. Academic integrity will become optional. If educators are punished for busting cheats, they will ignore mobiles, AI tools, or copied answer sheets to protect their own careers. Once cheating becomes risk-free, bright and hardworking students suffer.”
