A night of devotion and celebration turned chaotic in Cuttack as violent clashes broke out during a Durga Puja Murti immersion procession, leaving dozens injured — including a senior police officer.

The violence erupted around 1:30 a.m. near Haathi Pokhari and Dargha Bazaar, when local Islamists allegedly objected to the loud music and chanting coming from an immersion procession organized by the Jhanjirmangala Bhagabat Sahi Puja Committee. What began as an argument quickly spiraled into a full-blown riot, with stone-pelting, bottle-throwing, and vandalism reported from multiple locations.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo was among those injured while attempting to control the mob. Police used baton charges to disperse the crowd, as chaos spread through the old quarters of the city.

Several vehicles and roadside shops were damaged during the clashes, and the immersion procession was suspended for several hours before resuming under tight security at dawn.

In response, the district administration imposed Section 144 (curfew-like restrictions) across 13 police station limits and ordered a 24-hour internet and social media shutdown to prevent the spread of rumors. More than 60 police platoons and 8 paramilitary units have been deployed across Cuttack to maintain order.

At least six people have been arrested, with police reviewing CCTV and drone footage to identify more culprits.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) called for a 12-hour bandh (shutdown) in Cuttack, accusing authorities of failing to protect Hindu devotees. Puja committees echoed the sentiment, demanding strict action against the attackers and greater security for religious processions.

Odisha Chief Minister’s Office has condemned the incident, promising free treatment for the injured and a high-level inquiry into the violence.

With tensions still simmering, security forces remain on high alert, and citizens have been urged to maintain calm and communal harmony.
