From Sacred Hymns to Savage Horror : Muhammad Rakib and Two Associates Named in Brutal All-Night Gang Rape and torture of Speech-Impaired Hindu Mother Returning from Kirtan in Bhola, Bangladesh

When Devotion Turned to Darkness

When the hymns of devotion that had drifted across rural Bhola finally fell silent, a crime of unspeakable brutality emerged from the shadows.

On the fourth night of the five-day long Tirodhan Utsav honoring Achyudananda Brahmachari, more than 100,000 devotees had gathered in Aralia village of Tazumuddin Upazila for kirtan and prayer on 22nd February.

Among them was a 25-year-old Hindu housewife and mother, who had traveled nearly 15 kilometers to attend the sacred observance from her village of Shayestakandi. By dawn, she would be found naked, bleeding, and barely alive on a roadside.

According to the victim and local sources, she had boarded an autorickshaw at around 11 p.m. to return home. The driver, later identified as Muhammad Rakib, did not take her home. Instead, he allegedly diverted the vehicle to a secluded betel nut grove in Shashiganj village. There, according to investigators, he and his two associates Muhammad Shakil and Muhammad Rasel had subjected her to hours of sexual abuse and brutal torture.

Hours of Silence, Hours of Horror

The woman, who is speech-impaired and unable to clearly articulate words, was reportedly overpowered, forcibly drugged, tortured and gang-raped repeatedly till daybreak. Unable to scream for help, she endured hours of violence in isolation. At dawn, after sehri, mosque-goers discovered her discarded by the roadside in an unconscious, blood-soaked, and abandoned condition.

She was rushed first to Tazumuddin উপজেলা Health Complex and later transferred in critical condition to Bhola Sadar Hospital. The attending RMO, Dr. Shamsul Alam Sohel, confirmed severe blood loss and life-threatening injuries at the time of admission.

Critical Condition, Arrest and Manhunt

Police recovered blood-stained clothing from the hospital. Muhammad Rakib has been arrested in connection with the case. His associates are currently absconding, and a search operation is underway.

“Not Just a Crime — An Assault on Religious Security”

Minority rights activist Sushanta Das Gupta called the attack “not just a rape, but a direct assault on the religious freedom and security of Bangladesh’s Hindu community.”

“If a woman can be taken from the shadow of a religious celebration and brutalized,” he asked, “what promise of protection exists for the mothers and daughters of minority communities?”

The Bangladesh Minority Janata Party (BMJP) issued a statement expressing “deep concern, outrage and condemnation,” demanding immediate arrest of all named accused and exemplary punishment through a speedy trial tribunal. The party insisted that no political or social identity must shield the perpetrators and called for state protection for the victim’s family and proper medical care.

The Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has documented 28 cases of rape and gang-rape against Hindu women and girls in Bangladesh in 2025 alone , a statistic that frames this incident within a disturbing pattern rather than an isolated aberration.

The Larger Questions

The questions now extend beyond Bhola. Were adequate security measures in place for a gathering of over 100,000 worshippers and how many more such cases go underreported?

Civilization is measured not by the size of its festivals, but by the safety of its most vulnerable.

Until justice is swift, visible and uncompromising, the hymns of devotion in places like Tazumuddin will carry, beneath their melody, the echo of unanswered cries.
