Prolay Chaki, a well-known Hindu singer and senior leader of the ruling Awami League from Pabna District, Bangladesh, has died while in police/jail custody, sparking controversy and calls for investigation.
According to official and media reports, Chaki — who also served as the Cultural Affairs Secretary of the Awami League’s Pabna unit — was detained by the Detective Branch of Bangladesh Police on December 16, 2025 in connection with an ongoing case.
Chaki, aged 60, reportedly fell seriously ill in Pabna District Jail and was first taken to Pabna Sadar Hospital before being transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital due to deteriorating health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. He died on the evening of January 11, 2026, while still under treatment.
Family Alleges Negligence
Chaki’s family has strongly rejected the official claim that his death was due to natural causes, alleging medical negligence and inadequate care while he was under custody. They claim that prison authorities failed to provide timely and proper treatment despite clear deteriorations in his condition.
Human rights groups have also condemned the custodial death and called for accountability, citing obligations under international human rights standards to ensure adequate medical care for detained individuals.
Official Position
Prison officials acknowledged Chaki’s illness and confirmed his transfer to medical facilities before his death, but they denied any wrongdoing or negligence in his treatment.
Political and Cultural Impact
Prolay Chaki was not only a political figure but also a respected cultural personality in Bangladesh’s music scene, particularly noted for his contributions as a singer and cultural organizer. His death has generated public debate over custodial treatment and minority rights in the current political climate.
