A Muslim Youth Arrested for Vandalizing Kali Temple Idols in Nilphamari, Communal Tension Rises

A shocking incident of idol vandalism has sparked outrage in Nilphamari’s Sadar upazila. On Thursday evening, four idols at the Kali temple in Subarnakhuli village, under Songolshi union, were damaged by a youth, triggering anger and tension among the local Hindu community.

According to eyewitnesses, women devotees were inside the temple for worship around 6:30 PM when the assailant began smashing the idols. Hearing their screams, villagers rushed to the spot, overpowered the youth, and immediately informed the police.

The arrested youth has been identified as Erfan Ali (18), son of Moin Khan from Porar Hat area in Syedpur upazila.

Temple Committee President Pankaj Kumar stated, “Around 6:30 PM, the man stormed inside and started breaking the idols. Women devotees first noticed him and raised the alarm.”

Following the complaint filed by Temple Committee Secretary Bijoy Chandra Roy, police arrested the attacker. Investigating officer SI Ahsan Habib confirmed the arrest and said legal action has already been initiated.

The incident has left the Hindu community in fear, raising concerns about religious harmony in the region.
