Islamist terrorism is no longer an episodic crisis; it is a lived reality that the civilised world is forced to confront on a daily basis. The location changes every few months. The profile of victims varies, except for one constant: they belong to the “other” section — those whom the perpetrators believe have no right to live, and whose killing is rewarded with redemption after death. While the victims and venues differ, the belief system of the perpetrators does not.
In large measure, this menace is the product not only of Islamist radicalism that refuses to coexist with others, but also of the repeated failure of the ‘liberal’ world to learn from each attack and craft a coherent, long-term response. Every act of terrorism paves the way for the next. Had the liberal, democratic world acted with unity and resolve after Pahalgam, the Delhi attack might not have occurred. Had Delhi been decisively addressed, Bondi may never have happened.
Instead, the world — particularly the West — continues to view terrorism in silos, differentiating between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ terrorists. The cost of this moral confusion is paid, repeatedly, by innocents across the globe……”
